Jackets Beat Cougars for First RMAC Win

Box Score

Spearfish, S.D. – Brady Bisgaard played 38 minutes and scored a team-high 15 points in Black Hills State's (2-5, 1-2 RMAC)  first-ever men's basketball  RMAC win over Colorado Christian (5-6, 0-3 RMAC) 72-68 on Friday night.

The other major story of the night was the Yellow Jackets committed a season-low 10 turnovers and forced 16 Cougar turnovers. BHSU had three players score in double-digits, including Bisgaard, Joey Mitchell (13), and Cameron Anderson (12). Mitchell had another impressive shooting performance, hitting 4-of-7 from behind the arc.

BHSU jumped out to an early 9-0 and continued to dominate the majority of the first half as they built a 24-13 lead with 7:17 remaining in the first half. The Cougars didn't go away and brought the BHSU lead to just four points, 36-32, going into halftime. Tanner Adler led the Yellow Jackets with nine points and Austin Maag brought down five boards in the first half.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets went back-and-forth with the Cougars, maintaining a lead until Colorado Christian made a push for 48-49 lead with 12:40 remaining. The Yellow Jackets rode the shoulders of Mitchell, Bisgaard and Anderson for the remainder of the contest. The Cougars brought the game within one point with 18 seconds, but Bisgaard hit two clutch free throws. Mitchell iced the game with a free throw with two ticks on the clock, which led to the 72-68 win.

"We got out to a great start, I thought we relaxed a little bit and obviously they made a run," said head coach Bradd Schafer. "It turned into a pretty tight ball game"

Mitchell scored all 13 of his points in the second half and Bisgaard was 10-of-12 from the stripe. The Yellow Jackets shot 38.5 percent and 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from behind the arc. The Yellow jackets were out rebounded 33 to 45.

"Defensively, we didn't get rebounds and we didn't get stops and it allowed them to get back in the game," said Schafer. "I thought we learned our lesson down the stretch last weekend and we were able to make some plays late to win the game."

Schafer noted that Brody Brisk forced a crucial turnover and Kevin Hanes had a solid performance in the post.

The Yellow Jackets play Colorado School of Mines (5-2, RMAC 2-1) tomorrow at 7 p.m.
