Black Hills State Softball Picks-Up First RMAC Win Over Fort Lewis College

Farmington, N.M. – The Black Hills State University softball team picked up their first regular season win over Fort Lewis College 9-6 in their first game of the day to improve to 1-2 in RMAC play. The Yellow Jackets were unable to repeat their performance in the second game of the double header. They would go on to lose in the second game by a final score of 5-13.


The Yellow Jackets picked up their first win of the 2012 season against Fort Lewis on Sunday morning. Black Hills State was led by senior pitcher Katie Wagner who picked up her first win of the season with a 9-6 showing over the Skyhawks. Wagner pitched all seven innings for Black Hills State, giving up six runs (three earned runs) on five hits. Wagner also had a good day in the batter's box; she recorded one run on two hits with two at-bats, including a homerun in the third inning.


Black Hills State's offensive efforts were led by sophomore Kelsie Chambers who finished the game with two runs on one hit with two runners batted in. Chambers also recorded a homerun in the game. Junior center fielder Allie Alverson recorded two runs on one hit and also recorded one RBI on four at-bats. Junior second baseman Kyley Barela also had a solid offensive effort; she recorded one run and two RBIs on two hits in four at-bats.


Coach Gurney and her team were unable to repeat their performance in the second game of the double header. Yellow Jacket pitcher Nikki Chacon took the start from the mound. Chacon went on to pitch two innings, recording two strike outs and giving up seven runs on six hits. Alex Huntington took over the mound for the remaining two-and-a-half innings of the contest. Huntington recorded one strike out while giving up six runs on six hits. Chacon was credited with the loss as Black Hills State went on to lose in four-and-a-half innings by a final score of 5-13.


The Yellow Jackets were led in the offensive push by sophomore Lenaya Vigil. Vigil stepped to the plate only twice, but connected on a three-run shot for her first homerun of the season. Huntington also played well at the plate for Black Hills State as she recorded two RBIs on two hits.


The Yellow Jackets (1-8) will return to the diamond Saturday, March 3 as they play host to RMAC opponent Metro State University. Game times are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. MT and 2:00 p.m. MT. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for youth and senior citizens. Black Hills State all-season passes will also be accepted.
