Box Score 2 Golden, Colo.- The Black Hills State University softball team fell to the Colorado Mines Ore Diggers in their second day of double headers by a score of 2-0 in the first game of the day and 7-6 in the second game of the day. The Yellow Jackets fall to 5-20 overall and 4-14 in the RMAC.
The Yellow Jackets saw a pitchers dual in the first game of the day as the game was scoreless through the first 5.5 innings. The Ore Diggers drove in two runs to take the 0-2 lead in the sixth inning. Both teams' recorded seven hits in the contest. Black Hills State senior pitcher Katie Wagner was tagged with the loss after she pitched all six innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with one walk and two strike-outs.
Black Hills State was led offensively by junior Alex Huntington and freshman Nia Shumpert who each recorded two hits in three at bats. Huntington also recorded four put-outs in the game.
The Yellow Jackets were able to get their offense on track in the second contest of the day as they reeled off nine hits and scored six runs. Despite their offensive production, Black Hills State came up one run short as they fell to the Ore Diggers 6-7. Wagner pitched three innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with one walk and one strike-out. Wagner was tagged with the loss. Junior Nikki Chacon pitched in relief for Black Hills State and gave up three runs on five hits in three innings pitched.
Black Hills State trailed Colorado Mines by three runs at the end of the sixth inning before junior Allie Alverson hit a two run homerun in the top of the seventh. The Yellow Jackets were unable to score a third run in the inning to tie the contest up and would eventually fall by a single run. Alverson was the leadoff batter for Black Hills State and led the offensive charge, recording one run and three hits on four at bats. Alverson was also able to record three RBI's in the final game of the weekend.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action as they travel to Chadron, Neb. on Wednesday, March 28 to play a double header against RMAC foe Chadron State College. Game times are scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. MT.
