Box Score 2 Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team took to the field today in the first day of double-headers against University of Nebraska-Kearney. The Yellow Jackets got swept by the Lopers by scores of 5-4 and 10-5 Saturday afternoon at the BHSU Softball Complex in Spearfish.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Lopers got their offense going. Black Hills State led Nebraska-Kearney 4-2 after six innings before giving up three runs in the top of the seventh inning to fall by a score of 5-4.
Senior pitcher Katie Wagner was tagged with the loss, she pitched a complete game and gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits with four strike-outs and two walks, she faced 34 batters.
Black Hills State was led offensively in the first game of the day by Wagner who recorded two hits and two runs with one RBI in three at-bats. Junior Allie Alverson finished the contest with two hits and one run in four at-bats.
The Yellow Jackets returned to the diamond for their second match-up of the day falling to the Lopers 5-10. Black Hills State was able to strike first as they put up one run in the first inning before Nebraska-Kearney answered with a one run second inning and a three run third inning.
Wagner returned to mound and pitched the first 4.1 innings before junior Nikki Chacon came in as relief, Wagner was tagged with the loss, she gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits. Chacon gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and three strike-outs.
Alverson once again led the Yellow Jacket offensive charge from her lead-off position, she recorded three runs on three hits in four at bats and recorded one RBI. Junior Alex Huntington recorded one run on one hit and sophomore Kelsie Chambers finished the contest with one run on three hits and two RBI's.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action tomorrow, April 1 as they finish their season series against the Lopers, game times are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. MT.
