Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State volleyball team bounced back from its game-one loss to Briar Cliff and defeated Minot State Friday evening at the Yellow Jacket Volleyball Classic presented by Holiday Inn and Lucky's 13 Pub.
In Yellow Jackets' first game against Briar Cliff, BHSU forced five games (25-18, 21-25, 23-25, 25-16, 14-16), but fell in a close final game. Caitlin Templeton and Amy O'Neill led the Yellow Jackets with a combined 35 kills. Sophomore Kelsey Olson recorded 21 digs.
Briar Cliff was led by Jenna Berg who tallied 17 kills.
In BHSU's second match, The Yellow Jackets won against Minot State in front of an impressive crowd in the Donald E. Young Center. Minot State forced five games, but the Yellow Jackets were able to close the game out with clutch team play.
Meghan Sipe and Holly Hamlin had constantly strong play throughout the match, adding a combined 11 kills. Sipe contributed 11 digs, second on the team to Olson who recorded 19. Darbi Yost spread the ball around for 26 assists. O'Neill and Templeton once again spearheaded the attack with 19 and 13 kills respectively.
Minot State's Emily Byrne recorded 38 assists and Mallory Sall led the Beavers with 15 kills.
The Yellow Jackets will play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Michigan Tech and conclude the tournament against University of Mary at 5 p.m.
