Box Score Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State Yellow Jackets lost to the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on a last-second shot, 65-63, in Spearfish on Saturday night.
This game was closely contested from the start, seeing runs made and answered by each team in the early going. Tanner Adler had an exceptional game for the Jackets, scoring 13 points in the first half, including shooting a perfect three for three from behind the arc in the opening period. Black Hills State closed the half on a 16-5 run and went into halftime ahead 35-29.
The second half began with an early run by Fort Lewis, outscoring the Jackets 11-3 in the first seven minutes of play. The rest of the half saw momentum swing in the Skyhawks' favor unitl the two minute mark.
Trailing by five, 60-55, the Jackets made their push. Adler scored all eight Yellow Jacket points in last two minutes, giving the Yellow Jackets the lead, 63-62, with just six seconds remaining in the game. After a timeout, the Skyhawks moved the ball quickly up the court and found Nick Tomsick on the wing for what would be the game-winning three point basket. Black Hills State fell just short, 65-63.
"I think we took a step in the right direction tonight," said head coach Bradd Schafer. "We played really hard. I'm just so proud of our guys."
Black Hills State was led by Adler, who scored 26 points and pulled down five rebounds. Brady Bisgaard scored 11 points, dished out two assists, and added two steals on the night. Joey Mitchell and Cameron Anderson scored eight and six points, respectively.
Black Hills State will take on RMAC rival Chadron State in Chadron, Neb. this Saturday, January 12th.
