CMU wins in three straight sets

(25-15, 25-16, 25-21)

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University Yellow Jacket volleyball team dropped their second match of the weekend at the hands of the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, 3-0, who is now tied for first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and move to 14-2 overall on the season and 7-1 in the RMAC.

With the loss, the Jackets now sit at 5-11 overall and 1-7 in conference match-ups.  CMU now is on a six-match win streak and looking to be ranked nationally by week's end.

The story of the night was the Mavericks' consistent hitting performance where they hit no lower than an average of .276 and hit a match-high .326 average to close out the match in set three.

After losing the first two sets by a combined score of 50-31, the Yellow Jackets stepped up for a strong third set where they led multiple times but eventually lost late in the set, 25-21.  The Jackets also had their best hitting performance in the third after going 10-of-36 with four errors for a .167 hitting-percentage.

CMU's top-two hitters on the night were Christian Otzen who had 18 kills and Melissa Hess who tallied 12 more.  Maverick setter, Jordyn Moody, had a match-high 39 assists and four digs.  Defensively, three Maverick players had double-figure dig totals including Sunni Rae Baird with 18, Tiffany Peterson with 13, and Otzen notched 10 digs to give her a double-double on the night.

The Yellow Jackets did win the blocking game in the match after nine blocks to CMU's five, which keeps the Jackets in the top spot in the RMAC while averaging 2.61 blocks per set.  Holly Hamlin had 5.5 blocks to keep her ranked first in the conference in the category.  Caitlin Templeton led the offense with seven kills and also turned in 3.5 blocks defensively.

Lacy Stevens had her second quality performance in a row after starting last night's game as she had 10 digs on the match to lead the team.  Meghan Sipe had nine digs, libero Kelsey Olson had eight, and senior hitter, Amy O'Neill, had seven more digs on top of seven kills.

The next match for the Yellow Jackets will again come at home on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 with the first serve set for 7:00 p.m. MT from the Young Center.
