GUNNISON, Colo. – The Yellow Jackets volleyball team snapped their 11-match losing streak by outscoring the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University (1-20, 0-13 RMAC) on Saturday night by a combined score of 78-50 in a straight set victory (3-0).
With the win, the Jackets picked up their second-overall Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory on the year as their record moves to 6-16 overall, 2-11 RMAC.
"Tonight we played as a team from start to finish. Amy O'Neill and Kelsey Olson lit the fire with aggressive defense," BHSU head coach, Sally Nichols said. "Overall it was a great team effort."
One of the team's strongest players, O'Neill finished with an impressive 14 kills on 37 attacks with just two errors to give her another match-high, .324 hitting-percentage.
O'Neill helped guide her team to winning two out of the three sets by double digits with the largest margin of victory coming in the third where the Jackets won the set by the largest margin of the year in any match by a score of 25-9. Olson, who is the second leading libero in the RMAC, finished the night with 13 digs.
Yellow Jacket junior, Meghan Sipe, was one kill away from another double-double as she turned a .314 hitting average with nine kills and 10 digs along with two blocks. Senior captain, Caitlin Templeton, finished the match with four kills, five digs, and three solo blocks.
"Meghan had a great performance at the net placing the ball out of reach and Caitlin, Shelby Mayer, and Holly Hamlin were a force on the blocking front," Nichols said.
Mayer and Hamlin came into the game ranked in the top 10 in the RMAC with Hamlin leading the conference in blocks as she continued her high-level of defense with six blocks on the night (three solo, three assisted). Mayer had two more blocks to contribute to the Jackets' 13 blocks as a team on the match. Mayer and Hamlin combined for eight kills.
Freshman setter, Brynn Eckhardt, finished the match with 28 assists, nine digs, and two blocks as Lacy Stevens stepped in again to grab eight more digs for the Jackets' defensive effort, which Coach Nichols said were "sensational" defensive plays turned in by both Eckhardt and Stevens after the match.
The Jackets strung together a consistent hitting performance as a team as they .216 on the night, with their best hitting average coming in the third where they hit .269 as a team. Defensively, BHSU held WSCU to negative hitting-percentages in two-out-of-three sets as the Mountaineers best set came in set two after hitting .170.
WSCU rode the backs of Josie Hopkins who had nine kills and four digs, along with libero Allison Walker who finished with 24 assists and eight digs.
The next match for BHSU will come in the Yellow Jackets final home weekend of the season versus Colorado Christian University on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 at 7 p.m. from the Young Center.
