LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Yellow Jacket volleyball team (5-9, 1-4 RMAC) lost both matches over the weekend as they escaped the Spearfish snow storm as they took on No. 19 Colorado School of Mines Friday night, and Colorado Christian University on Saturday night.
Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, both teams managed to take every set in each match as Mines beat the Jackets in straight sets, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23, as did CCU after defeating the Jackets, 25-16, 25-18, and 25-22.
BHSU is currently 0-5 in their last five matches with their last victory coming over rival Chadron St. on Sept. 24th, by a score of 3-1.
Versus Mines, the Jackets heavy hitters, Amy O'Neill and Caitlin Templeton, where held to just 20 total kills combined offensively, while conference's leading dig getter, libero Kelsey Olson, was held to a season-low 10 digs in the loss.
Freshman setter, Brynn Eckhardt, was back on track as she was close to her season average in assists per set of 10.63, as she totaled 28 assists in the match (9.33 avg/s).
Holly Hamlin did turn-in one of her better performances for her team on Friday night as she helped her club remain ranked first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after tallying one block and six assisted blocks, while having five kills and a .235 hitting percentage.
The Jackets' best offensive set was the second, where they hit .212 as a team, while Mines hit an impressive .455 after going 20-of-33 with just five errors. Mines is now second-overall in the RMAC standings behind only Colorado Mesa (12-2, 5-1 RMAC).
Saturday night was another stiff test for the Jackets with an improving CCU team that currently sits near the middle of the conference standings with a record of 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the RMAC.
While the Yellow Jackets gradually improved to cut the gap closer in each set, CCU did prevail each time taking the victory, 3-0. CCU's consistency made the difference in the night as their hitting percentage never dropped below .225 in the match.
CCU's best set came in the first when they had 18 kills on 44 total attacks with five errors, which was good for a match-high hitting percentage of .295.
The third set proved to be the best hitting performance for the Jackets and the closest on the night, after going 13-of-45 with their match-low five errors (.178 avg).
Hamlin again finished strong on defense with two blocks and four assisted, but also proved that she is becoming one of the most balanced players on the team after racking up a season-high 10 kills versus CCU.
Hamlin finished 10-of-21 (.476 avg) with no hitting errors.
Libero Kelsey Olson got back on track with 28 digs on the match, on way to the team's 64 total digs. Others contributing defensively were Amy O'Neill with 11 digs and Meghan Sipe with 10. Eckhardt and Lacy Stevens combined for 13 on the night.
While Hamlin led the team with 10 kills, O'Neill and Templeton each ended the night with eight, as Eckhardt remained one of the RMAC's top setters after her 29 assists.
Next up for the Jackets are four straight home contests, beginning with Fort Lewis at 7 p.m. MT on Oct. 11th, from the Young Center.
