Mustangs defeat Yellow Jackets, 38-14

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Western New Mexico Mustangs moved to 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC after their 24-point victory over BHSU on Saturday afternoon.

While the Yellow Jackets were only down 14-7 at halftime, WNMU used the play of senior running back, Abe Macias, to carry them to the win after he turned in 167 yards on the ground after 38 carries (4.4 avg) and two touchdowns.  Macias also was successful after kicking an extra-point field goal after filling-in for their injured kicker late in the game.

The leader for the Jackets on the offensive end was junior quarterback, Ward Anderson, who went 20-of-41 for 242 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions on the day and he also was second on the team in rushing on eight attacks for 34 yards (4.2 avg) and one score.  Senior running back, Drew Nielsen, led the Jackets on the ground with 16 carries for 69 yards (4.3 avg) with a long of 17 yards.  Junior wide-out, Brek Carper, led the team in receiving with four catches for 67 yards (16.8 avg) and a touchdown.

The Jackets offense totaled 375 yards (242 pass) and had their seventh game of the year over the century mark with 133 rushing yards.

While the Jackets defense was challenged by a Mustang offense that tallied 563 total yards on the afternoon, three BHSU defenders had at least 10 tackles.  Sophomore linebacker, Trent Boner, led the way with 19 total tackles (6 solo), LB Jeremy Tuten racked up 11 tackles, as defensive back Darick Eisenbraun continues to lead the way in the secondary with physical play as he finished with 10 tackles (1 TFL).

Mustang sophomore quarterback, Mitch Glasmann, had an effective day after completing 65-percent of his passes on the day while going 20-of-31 for 319 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception to Jacket cornerback, Bradley Hunter, in the first half.

The Mustangs also relied heavily on converting third downs to keep their drives alive after going 8-of-17 for a success rate of 47-percent.  The Jackets went 4-of-11 on third down plays, good for 36-percent.  Harrison Dollins had a solid day on special teams where he had four kick returns for 82 yards (20.5 avg) with a long of 32 yards in the second half.

Next up for the Yellow Jackets is their last road game of the season as they travel down to Durango, Colo. to take on Fort Lewis College (4-6, 3-5 RMAC) on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. MT.
