Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. - With less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, with the Yellow Jackets holding onto a 73-70 lead, it was Colorado Christian University guard, Kyle Weaver, who took the inbound pass and drove down the right side of the court to put up a desperation three-pointer that banked off the glass and in as the buzzer sounded to force overtime on Saturday night from the Young Center.
After the Jackets took an early lead in the first overtime, 77-73, the Cougars and Jackets traded shots the rest of the way to get to a tied game yet again, 85-85, as time expired. An additional five minutes were put up on the scoreboard as the teams were set for a second overtime period.
Thanks to Weaver's play in the second overtime, CCU opened up a seven-point lead, 93-86, just one minute into the period. The Cougars held onto the lead and fought off the Jackets pressure to secure the 105-101 victory as they hit their foul shots down the stretch by going 30-of-35 (85.7%) from the free-throw line as a team.
Weaver finished the night with a game-high 34 points on 6-of-14 shooting, but found a bulk of his points coming from the charity stripe as he finished 18-of-19 (94.7%) on free throws. The Yellow Jackets were led once again by Myles Henry, who started the game and finished with 24 points on 6-of-15 shooting and seven rebounds. Henry led the Jackets with 12 free throws on 17 trips to the line, as he played a team-high 41 minutes.
The Cougars shooters were not shy from beyond-the-arch as they made 13 three-point shots on the night on 30 attempts, to put them at 43-percent shooting as a team from 3-point land. The Jackets struggled in that department all night as they finished just 5-of-25 (20%) on three-pointers.
Avery Redmond had 21 points and Michael Brown finished with 20 points to round out the top-three performers for the Cougars, as Lance Vesper (12 points) and Andrew Squiers (10 points) rounded out the team's double-digit scorers.
The Yellow Jackets had four more players finish in double-figures in scoring in addition to Henry with senior, Tommy Earl, dropping in 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting to go with five rebounds and two blocks. Junior point-guard, Brady Bisgaard, had 16 points with two timely 3-point shots in the second half along with clutch free throws late, as he finished 6-of-7 from the line. In 20 minutes of play, junior Yoshio Allen had an impressive performance as he was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points (4-7 FG) and nine rebounds (5 offense, 4 defense). Junior Cameron Anderson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Jackets pulled down 58 rebounds (37 defense, 21 offense) to the Cougars' 36. CCU turned the ball over 12 times and forced the Jackets to 16 turnovers that allowed them multiple fast break points.
Both teams shot 43-percent from the field overall, while CCU stepped up to hit 12-of-21 three-pointers in the second half and overtime periods combined, after having made just 1-of-10 three-pointers in the first half.
The next game for the Jackets will come tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. as they welcome the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's first-place team to the Young Center in the Colorado School of Mines (6-0, 4-0 RMAC).
