Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Black Hills State University men's basketball team gave the nation's No. 18 ranked team, Colorado School of Mines (7-0, 5-0 RMAC), all they can handle on Sunday as held off the Jackets defense in the closing minutes to snag the win on the road, 78-69.
While the Orediggers had highly touted big-men in Trevor Wages (6-foot-9) and Will Carr (6-foot-11), it was the Yellow Jackets' Yoshio Allen (6-foot-5) who could not be stopped most of the night on way to a game-high 24 points after going 10-of-15 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to go with five rebounds on 30 minutes.
At the half, the Jackets trailed by just three points. CSM jumped out to a seven-point lead to start the second half before BHSU caught up to be within a single point, 52-51 with 11:22 to play in the game. From then-on-out, the Jackets traded shots as their defense seemed to stifle the CSM big-men down low. CSM did however use their height to out rebound BHSU 49 to 34, which led to multiple second chance points after 17 offensive rebounds.
Senior, Tommy Earl, again showed up to play effectively for the Jackets as he went for 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including a game-best 4-for-4 on three-pointers. Earl also had six rebounds (3 offense, 3 defense) to go with two assists. Cameron Anderson had eight points and eight rebounds to provide a balanced game for his team as Myles Henry came off the bench to add nine points.
CSM as a team went 26-of-65 (40%) shooting as the Jackets went a similar 25-of-63 (39.7%) shooting including 7-of-25 (29.2%) from beyond the arch. One of the advantages the Orediggers used was their shooting from the free-throw line as they shot almost 13-percent better then the Jackets after going 22-of-28 (78.6%), while the Jackets finished 12-of-20 (60%) from the line.
The visiting Orediggers used four players in their offensive attack that wound up in double-figures as Luke Meisch led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Brian Muller finished with 15 points, Brett Green had 13 points, and Carr came off the bench to finish with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets (4-3, 2-2 RMAC) get back on the court next Friday night to face Metro State from the Young Center at 7:30 p.m.
