Jackets send seniors out with exciting victory over rival Chadron St.

Box Score

SPEARFISH, S.D. – After a tie at halftime, the physical battle between the two rival schools ended with the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets closing the door on Chadron St. in the last minutes of play with a 57-51 victory in the final game of the season on Saturday night at the Young Center.

With just 1:42 seconds remaining in the game, the Yellow Jackets had the lead 52-50.  After a made free-throw by the Eagles to cut the lead to just one-point as the game approached the last minute, BHSU guard Brody Brisk, drove the baseline and threw home a one-handed dunk that sparked the already raucous crowd and sprung the Yellow Jackets to hold on with stout defense in the last minute of play.

Brisk's jam extended the lead to three-points and from then on out the Eagles continued to miss free throws, which seemed to be their achilles heel as they finished 18-of-38 from the stripe (47.4%).  BHSU hit a few more free throws to extend the lead to six as the last buzzer rang.

On a night where seniors, Ryan Allen and Jordan Dolph, were sent off with a victory, BHSU head coach Bradd Schafer was pleased to see his team come together tonight.

"I thought our defense played well, we held the RMAC leading scorer Zac Bargen (18.2 ppg) to just 12 points, that's a credit to the defense of Joey Mitchell," Head Coach, Bradd Schafer said after the win. "It was great to see Ryan Allen and Jordan Dolph play hard and help us get to 20 offensive rebounds, which will help you win games."

The largest lead for the Yellow Jackets was seven points; while CSC's largest lead was just four points.

Another advantage that went to the Yellow Jackets was the depth they showed after scoring 27 bench points to 14 by CSC.  Leading scorer, Tanner Adler, was limited to just four points on 1-of-6 shooting, therefore the likes of Brisk stepped up with 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting that included two three-pointers.  Cam Anderson contributed 10 points on the night, which included him taking flight with a massive two-handed jam over two Eagle defenders earlier in the game.

Senior Ryan Allen, who also finished with 10 points and four rebounds to go along with a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line, commented on tonight's gritty win.

"My teammates finding me was key tonight and crashing the boards and getting put backs," Allen said.

"Outworking everyone on the court is what I try to do…nothing like beating Chadron, I wouldn't want to beat anyone else rather than Chadron.  It was a good night with my teammates and I'll remember this night for a long time."

BHSU only had eight turnovers on the night, while forcing the Eagles to 16.  The 40 rebounds pulled down by the Jackets (20 offensive, 20 defensive) allowed them to drop 17 second chance points to just four by CSC.

Junior, Tanner Adler, finished the season averaging 17.1 points per game – good for third in the RMAC.  Cam Anderson's 50-percent shooting average put him at 13th overall in the conference.  BHSU finished the season on a two-game win streak, as they earned their sixth RMAC victory in just their first season in the conference, while finishing 7-19 overall.
