SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Regis University Rangers (5-5, 1-0 RMAC) defeated the Black Hills State University volleyball team (4-4, 0-1 RMAC) in four sets on Friday night from the Young Center as RU took set-one, 25-18, and sets three and four (26-24 and 25-23).
The lone set win for the Jackets came in set two as they answered back with their most complete set of the night while winning, 25-20.
The Rangers relied on a trio of players who combined for 80-percent of the team's total kills and had at least 17 points in No. 3 Caitie Breaux who led the match 19 kills, followed by Sage Martinson and lefty Katie Klein who each had 17 kills of their own.
The loss snaps a two-match winning streak the Yellow Jackets were riding into the weekend after having competed in tournaments in Kearney, Neb. and Mankato, Minn. to start the season.
In front of a packed house at the Young Center, the Jackets were not short in the effort department as the big-hitters in seniors Amy O'Neill and Caitlin Templeton made their presence felt with their big arms that racked up 32 total kills combined.
Templeton continues to lead the way in hitting percentage as she turned in another solid night after going 14-for-31 on attacks, good for an average of .387 to go with four blocks defensively. O'Neill remained one of the conference's most balanced players on Friday night as she turned in 15 digs to go with 21 points.
The team's workhorse at libero, Kelsey Olson, led the way with 22 digs while Meghan Sipe helped add strength defensively as she had 18 digs and was third on the night with 11 kills.
One of the RMAC's leading blockers from a season ago, Holly Hamlin, continued to provide timely defensive while adding five kills and totaling seven points.
The Rangers' setter, Jaclyn Williamson had 50 assists on the night and 13 digs to help their attack remain consistent overall all four sets. On the other side of the net, true freshman setter for the Jackets, Brynn Eckhardt, continues to impress as totaled 45 assists on the night while averaging 11.28 per set this season after eight matches.
On Saturday night at 5 p.m. MT, the Jackets will have an opportunity to notch their first RMAC victory on their home court versus the Metro St. Roadrunners (5-4, 1-0 RMAC).
