Colorado Mines defeat Jackets, 62-22

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (2-1, 1-0 RMAC), took down the Black Hills State University football team (0-3, 0-1 RMAC) on Saturday afternoon by a score of 62-22.

Led by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's leading passer, the Orediggers' threw for 521 yards as a team and ran for another 228 yards on the day.  Mines' quarterback, Matt Brown, led the way as he went 31-of-40 for 380 yards and six touchdown passes along with 6 rushes for 85 yards including a long of 55 yards.

Coming into Saturday, Mines' had been averaging 47 points per game in their first two contests, but as head coach in his second year, John Reiners alluded to, he and he team simply have to perform better and know they will going forward.

"We'll be playing another quality opponent like this come next week so like I told the guys we just have to clean up our game and fix the silly mistakes," Reiners said. "We have to be a more discipline team and we will, our guys don't quit and we'll be back next week without a doubt."

The Mines' defense contained the RMAC's leading touchdown passer in BHSU quarterback Ward Anderson, as he went 17-for-28 for 164 and a touchdown.

Senior running back for the Jackets, Drew Nielsen, was the leading rusher for BHSU with seven rushes for 27 yards and a touchdown before back-up quarterback Matt Rassmussen took over late in the second half to rush for 30 yards on 5 carries (6.0 avg) to lead the Jackets in that department.

Brek Carper was the leading receiver for W. Anderson and the Jacket offense after reeling in four receptions for 46 yards.  WR Alex Anderson had the lone touchdown grab for his team in the third quarter with a 20-yard score from W. Anderson.  A. Anderson finished with two grabs for 31 yards.

After the first quarter, Mines' lead was just 14-0, but as the game reached halftime – Mines' put up a quick 21 points to extend their lead at the break, 28-3, after BHSU's freshman kicker made his first field goal of his career from 28 yards out to keep the Jackets within three touchdowns.

Mines' however continued their offensive dominance that they started from game one as they beat South Dakota Mines 72-6 just two weeks ago.

In the third quarter, Mines' scored more points by way of Brown and back-up QB Joe Schneider.

A. Anderson's score for the Jackets made the score 41-10 before the fourth quarter where the Jackets highlight of the day came on CB Matt Grave's 35 yard interception return for a touchdown to give the Jackets 22 points on the afternoon.

Once again, sophomore linebacker, Trent Boner led the Jackets in tackles with eight.

The Orediggers' RB Dan Palmer was the second leading rusher on the day with 16 attacks for 71 yards and one score.

Next week, the Jackets travel for down to face Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. MT.
