Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Yellow Jacket men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Friday night, after using a dominant second half performance to secure the 15-point, 75-60, victory to push them to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Early on the shots weren't falling for the Jackets, who went 9-of-30 (30%) shooting in the first half. However, the second half was a different story as they came out on a 7-0 run to open the half. BHSU improved to 55.2-percent shooting in the second half after hitting 16-of-29 shots.
An obvious advantage the Jackets used all night was their ability to out rebound the Mustangs, which allowed for many second-chance points that the Yellow Jackets capitalized on throughout the night. BHSU had 45 total rebounds to WNMU's 27, as the Jackets pulled down 15 offensive boards to the Mustangs' 4. Yoshio Allen led the Jackets and had a game-high 9 rebounds to go with six points.
Sophomore, Myles Henry, led the way for his Jackets team to lead a trio of scorers that stepped up in the absence of starting point-guard, Brady Bisgaard, who was unable to play due to an injury. Henry finished 7-of-13 (5-5 FT) for 19 points and four rebounds.
BHSU's leading scorer on the season, Tommy Earl (17.1 ppg), finished the night with 16 points and five rebounds as junior, Joey Mitchell, handled the ball most of the night and was the third leading scorer with 15 to go with six rebounds and two steals. Mitchell went 4-of-6 on three-pointers to lead the game.
The Mustangs shot nearly 47-percent from the field in the first half, which allowed them to hang around to tie the game by halftime. The Jacket defense put an end to some of the open shots they had been getting after forcing WNMU to 36-percent shooting in the second half on 9-of-25 shooting. The Jackets also had nine steals on the night.
WNMU's Marcos Castrillo was the game's leading scorer with 23 points (10-14 FG). BHSU finished 20-of-30 from the free-throw line, while WNMU went 9-of-12 from the line.
Next up for the Jackets will be a 7:30 p.m. tip-off tomorrow night at the Young Center versus N.M. Highlands for a GREEN OUT presented by the Black Hills Pioneer.
