GOLDEN, Colo. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team put up a strong fight but fell 3-1 to No. 11 Colorado School of Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Friday night in Golden, Colorado.
The Orediggers, the preseason favorite in the RMAC, improve to 15-2 overall and 8-1 in the loop while the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-12, 4-5. Colorado Mines won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-17 before the Green and Gold took set three 29-27. CSM took the fourth and final set 25-20 to win the match 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets opened up a 9-4 lead in set three. After a CSM time out, the Yellow Jackets continued to push ahead 12-6, led by a pair of blocks from Fehrin Ward and Brynn Eckhardt.
The No. 11 Orediggers proved there mettle by pushing a 20-20 score. However, through four forced ties, the Yellow Jackets never trailed en route to the 29-27 victory. The final two Green and Gold points came from a Kill off the hand of Kenzie Kazmer and a kill from Meghan Sipe. Both kills were assisted by Brynn Eckhardt.
In set four, the Yellow Jackets again got off to a hot start and held leads of 12-8 and 15-9 but Colorado Mines kept fighting back and knotted the score at 19-19 before prevailing 25-20.
The Yellow Jackets continue its road trip through Colorado with a 4 p.m. match at Metro State University of Denver.
