SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University football team tried to mount a comeback but ultimately ran out of time in a 37-27 loss to Adams State University Saturday afternoon at Lyle Hare Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets fell behind 23-0 at halftime before cutting the score to 30-15 and 37-27 but could not finish off the comeback as the clock struck zero.
The Grizzlies built a 9-0 lead behind three field goals from Keating Krauser. The first touchdown of the game was scored on a Demari Reynolds 15-yard interception return and the games first offensive touchdown came with 1:42 remaining in the half as Jabari Ray Garvin scampered into the end zone on a one-yard run.
Black Hills State started Zach Meyer at quarterback and he settled in to the position in the second half, beginning with a one-yard touchdown rush with 11:59 to go in the third quarter.
Adams State answered back with a 21-yard pass from Auston Hillman to Phil Romero to regain the 23-point advantage at 30-7.
With 3:03 remaining in the quarter, Meyer threw his first-career touchdown pass to Cameron Currington, a 24-yard reception. The Yellow Jackets attempted and connected on the two-point conversion to bring the score to 30-15.
The Grizzlies answered back with an 87 yard drive with 8:32 left as Michael Carl had a 15-yard run into the end zone, stretching the lead back out to 37-15.
As time began to tick away, the Green and Gold connected on two more touchdowns, the first with 6:36 left as Phydell Paris capped a six-play 71-yard drive. The Yellow Jackets attempted an onside kick, but were unable to recover.
However, after stopping the Grizzlies offensive threat, the Yellow Jackets took over at their own 15-yard line and traveled 85 yards for the touchdown. Meyer connected with Anthony Eboreime for a 22-yard pass to bring BHSU within 10 points at 37-27.
The ensuing kickoff was again an onside attempt but it dribbled out-of-bounds giving the Grizzlies the ball at the Black Hills 49 yard line with BHSU unable to stop the clock with 3:02 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets forced a three-and-out from Adams State and took over at their own 24-yard line with just 39 seconds remaining. It was too-little too-late for Black Hills State as the Grizzlies won 37-27 and earned their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory of the season, moving to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the RMAC.
The Yellow Jackets slip to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the loop and will look to get back on the winning track next Saturday at Chadron State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Chadron, Nebraska.
