CHADRON, Neb. – The Black Hills State University football team gave Chadron State College everything it had, including recovering an onside kick with 26 seconds remaining but could not get the go-ahead touchdown scored in a 33-28 loss Saturday afternoon in Chadron, Nebraska.
Down five points with 26 seconds remaining, Isaiah Jones recovered the perfectly kicked Trevor Naslund onside kick at the BHSU 46-yard line. The Eagles then foiled all four attempts that the Yellow Jackets had to get into the end zone as time expired.
With the victory, Chadron State improves to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-6, 1-5.
Chadron State got on the scoreboard first just 1:56 into the game when Cody Paul had a 17-yard rush into the end zone. The two-point conversion failed.
On the ensuing Yellow Jacket drive on a first and ten from the Eagles 40 yard line, Anthony Eboreime ran straight to the end zone where Ward Anderson perfectly placed the football for the touchdown reception. The touchdown capped a six-play 74-yard drive.
Chadron State scored on their next two possessions, a Michael Madkins 25-yard rush and an Austen Stephens 10-yard reception to take a 21-7 lead.
Moving into the second quarter, and on a fourth down and three, Luke Anderson found Luke Whalen for a 27-yard touchdown pass to pull within seven points at 21-14. On the play, Anderson used a pump fake while Whalen kept streaking into the end zone where he caught the wide open pass to cap the 12-play 75-yard drive.
The Eagles tacked on a 22-yard field goal to enter the intermission with a 24-14 lead.
Taking the kickoff in the second half, the Yellow Jackets traveled 75 yards over six plays to score their third touchdown of the game. Anderson again connected with Anthony Eboreime, this time a 26-yard play that saw Ebeoreime catch the ball one handed and trap against his helmet falling at the one yard line. That set up Anderson for a one-yard scamper into the end zone to pull within three points at 24-21.
Chadron State then hit three field goals to push the lead to 33-21. Randy Wentz connected on field goals of 32, 20 and 37 yards.
With time running low, the Yellow Jackets took over at their own 20 yard line with 1:41 remaining in the game. Black Hills State marched down field and scored a 13-yard touchdown as Bradley Adamson stretched his arms and latched onto Anderson's pass.
The Yellow Jackets then took recovered the onside kick but were unable to move the ball in the 33-28 loss as time expired.
The Yellow Jackets stay on the road next Saturday facing RMAC preseason favorite Colorado State University Pueblo. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
