MBB: Ryan's 22 Points Lead Thrilling Overtime Victory

Box Score

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Jeff Trumbauer Era as head men's basketball coach Black Hills State University began as exciting as it possibly could in a 72-67 overtime victory over South Dakota School of Mines Monday night in the Young Center.

The Yellow Jackets came back from an 11-point deficit with 3:54 remaining to knot the game a 62-62 and force overtime. Riley Ryan, who had a game-high 22 points, began the come-back stretch with a pair of free throws.

Philip Schanilec then hit one of two free throws for the Hardrockers when Brady Bisgaard sank a jumper to pull within seven points.

With 2:41 remaining, Riley Ryan made a steal on Konor Kulas and ensued to drain a 3-point basket as Bisgaard found Ryan on the left side of the key to pull within four points at 60-56.

The Ryan show continued as he sank a pair of free throws and jumper in the paint sandwiched around a pair of Jaisean Jackson free throws to pull within two points at 62-60.

With 51 seconds remaining, Nick Ongarato got the look the Yellow Jackets were looking for and tied the game on a layup.

Bisgaard had an opportunity to win the game with three seconds remaining but his contested show missed, forcing overtime.

The overtime was all Black Hills State starting with a Tate Hilgenkamp layup. Holding a 65-64 lead, Ryan continued his hot streak with a jumper followed by a wide opener three-pointer to take a 70-64 lead.

The jumper came as Bisgaard again found an open Ryan and the 3-point basket was started on a steal from Hilgenkamp. Nick Ongarato then hit Ryan with a picture-perfect pass for the trey.

South Dakota Mines would only be able to muster three free throws as the Yellow Jackets prevailed 72-67 to open the season with a victory for the second-straight season. The Hardrockers fall to 0-3 on the young season.

After Ryan's 22 points, all off the bench, Ongarato scored 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting while Brody Brisk tallied 11 points. Kulas had a team-high 18 points for the Hardrockers.

South Dakota Mines out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 36-33 while Kulas completed the double-double with 10 rebounds. Brisk and Ryan led BHSU with six rebounds apiece.

The Yellow Jackets travel to Alaska for the GCI Invite beginning Thursday facing the host Alaska Fairbanks. Game time is scheduled for 9 p.m. (MST) and a stream will be available for fans to listen to the game.
