FAIRBANKS, Alaska – A 3-point basket with less than 10 seconds remaining sank the Black Hills State University men's basketball team 68-66 in the opening game of the GCI Alaska Invitational.

Wyatt Krogman put the Yellow Jackets up 66-65 with 22 seconds remaining in the game but the hosts, Alaska Nanooks, hit a contested trey giving BHSU just enough time for a desperation shot that was unsuccessful.

Brody Brisk went 8-of-9 from the field for 17 points while the freshman Krogman scored 12 points for the Yellow Jackets as they fall to 1-1 on the year. Ashton Edwards scored a game-high 20 points as Alaska wins their opening game of the regular season.

After playing from behind for most of the game, Black Hills State went on a 9-0 run to knot the game at 46-46 with 12:04 remaining. The two squads would then have six lead changes and five ties throughout the rest of the game.

The Yellow Jackets would build their largest lead of the game, a five-point lead, with 3:39 remaining in the contest. Breaking a 57-all tie, Myles Henry scored an old-fashioned three-point play as Krogman followed with a layup to take a 62-57 lead.

The Nanooks stopped the quick burst and the game was knotted up at 63-63 and 65-65. With 22 seconds remaining in the game, Krogman drove the lane and picked up the foul where he went 1-for-2 on the charity stripe.

That set up Kyle Tomlinson for the game-winning 3-point basket in the corner. Ashton Edwards made a quick pass to Tomlinson who was well guarded but still managed to sink the trey for the 68-66 victory.

The Yellow Jackets outshot Alaska 51.9 percent to 45.6 percent while having two fewer turnovers. Alaska did hit 13 3-point baskets, going 13-for-30 from long range while the Yellow Jackets were 4-of-11.

Black Hills State will look to regroup quickly facing Minnesota State Moorhead Friday night in day two of the GCI Alaska Invitational. MSU Moorhead defeated West Alabama 86-75 on Thursday. Friday's tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. (MST).
