Box Score LAKEWOOD, Colo. – A cold-blooded 3-point basket from Michael Brown sank the Black Hills State University men's basketball team Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Action. The Yellow Jackets fell 71-68 to Colorado Christian in Lakewood, Colorado.
With the game knotted at 68-68 thanks to a Brady Bisgaard 3-point basket, Brown sank a 25-foot contested 3-point basket to win the game for the Cougars.
Myles Henry led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points while Wyatt Krogman scored a season-best 13 points. Ben Beauchamp scored 11 points off the BHSU bench.
Down 13-11 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Ben Beauchamp hit a pair of 3-point baskets sandwiched around an Isiah Hanson trey for the Cougars. After Beauchamp's second trey, Myles Henry grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the floor and dished out to Wyatt Krogman for a 3-point basket of his own to give the Yellow Jackets a 20-16 lead.
The Yellow Jackets entered the intermission with a 34-25 lead after Krogman hit a highlight-reel 3-point basket as time expired.
Black Hills State (3-6, 1-2 RMAC) pushed its lead to 13 points with 17:33 remaining in the game at 40-27. Henry drove the lane and scored on a layup for the largest lead in the game for BHSU.
Colorado Christian (6-3, 3-0 RMAC) methodically chipped away at the Yellow Jacket lead and pulled within one point multiple times and took a 54-52 lead on a Zach McLemore trey with 7:24 remaining in the game.
On the ensuing BHSU possession, Riley Ryan knotted the game on a layup but missed the opportunity for the old-fashioned three-point play.
The two squads played hot-potato with the lead until Michael Brown hit back-to-back 3-point baskets to give Colorado Christian a 63-58 lead with 3:25 remaining in the contest.
Following a pair of Beauchamp free throws and two-straight defensive stops, Henry took the ball coast-to-coast for the layup but was unable to convert on an and-one as the Yellow Jackets trailed 63-62 with 2:12 in the game.
Trailing 68-65, Bisgaard managed to get open at the top of the key and sank a trey to knot the game at 68-all with 27 seconds on the clock. The Cougars Brown then took manners into his own hands sinking the basket for the game-winner.
McLemore led the way for the Cougars with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting while Tyler Shields had 19 points. Brown scored 15 points, including the game-winner.
It was a hot-shooting night for both teams as the Yellow Jackets shot 24-of-48 from the field for 50 percent while the Cougars were 24-of-47 for 51.1 percent from the field. Most of the stats nearly equal across the board for both teams as each squad grabbed 25 rebounds while CCU had a slight edge with nine assists to eight.
Krogman grabbed a game-high six rebounds while the assists were spread out over seven players while Riley Ryan had two assists.
Black Hills State continues its stay in the Denver metro area with a 7 p.m. contest at Colorado School of Mines Saturday.
