MBB: Overtime Thriller Gives Yellow Jackets Win Over Western State

Box Score

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's basketball team withstood a late charge, including overtime, in a 64-57 victory over Western State Colorado University Friday night in the Young Center.

Down three and seconds remaining, Danny Hopkins fired a 3-point basket for Western State that clanked on the back iron but was quickly corralled by Keenan Prochazka and threw a prayer in the air, knotting the game at 55-55 to force overtime.

In the extra period, it was all Yellow Jackets as the Green and Gold outscored WSCU 9-2 to give former head coach Bradd Schafer a rough welcome back to the Young Center in his first year at Western State.

The Yellow Jackets (3-4, 1-0 RMAC) controlled the first half, building a lead as large as 14 points with 6:37 remaining on a Myles Henry jumper in the paint. The 28-14 lead would grow to a 35-25 halftime lead.

Western State (1-4, 0-1 RMAC) slowly chipped away at the lead throughout the second half before knotting the game at 50-50 with 3:08 remaining in regulation. The Yellow Jackets quickly regained a four-point lead thanks to a jumper from Riley Ryan and a pair of free throws from Brady Bisgaard.

The Mountaineers answered with a shot in the paint from Danny Hopkins with 38 seconds left making the score 54-52. Western State fouled Nick Ongarato with 13 seconds left. He managed to hit 1-of-2 shots from the charity stripe to give the Yellow Jackets a 55-52 lead and a glimmer of hope for Western.

The joy the shot from Prochazka hit to send the game into overtime was short lived as Ryan hit the opening basket of overtime and was followed by a free throw from Brody Brisk. After grabbing a rebound from a missed Mountaineer layup, the Yellow Jackets turned a fast-break layup into an old-fashioned three-point play.

Bisgaard ran the floor and dished off to Ryan under the basket for the easy lay-in that he was also fouled on, allowing him to make a free throw for the 61-55 lead.

The Yellow Jackets rode the momentum for their second overtime victory of the season with a final score of 64-57.

Bisgaard led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points while Yoshio Allen added 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Six of his rebounds came on the offensive end.

Mason Biddle scored a game-high 22 points and completed his own double-double with 10 rebounds.

Black Hills State owned the rebound margin 52-38 and had 14 offensive rebounds leading to 18 second-chance points. The Yellow Jackets also received 28 points from their bench, led by nine points from Ryan a Nick Ongarato.

The Yellow Jackets look for a 2-0 mark in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Saturday with a 6 p.m. tipoff against Colorado Mesa in the Young Center.
