MBB: Yellow Jackets Drop First RMAC Game of Season

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Facing a hot shooting Colorado Mesa University, the Black Hills State University men's basketball team fell 80-58 Saturday night in the Young Center in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest.

After being down by 10 points at intermission, the Mavericks (6-2, 1-1 RMAC) outscored the Yellow Jackets 45-33 in the second frame and shot 51.0 percent from the field in the game.

Black Hills State opened the second half with a Brady Bisgaard 3-point basket to cut the deficit to seven points but the Mavericks pushed the lead back to 12 points just three minutes later at 42-30.

The Yellow Jackets would again make a run, cutting the deficit to four points on a Nick Ongarato layup with 12:48 remaining. However a 21-2 Colorado Mesa run ballooned its lead to 23 points at 65-42 with 7:16 remaining, and carried the Mavericks to their first RMAC victory of the season.

Jerry Duckworth came off the bench for 27 points to lead CMU while Ryan Stephan scored 23 points.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Brady Bisgaard with 12 points. Bisgaard also had a time-high four assists. Black Hills State shot 38.5 percent from the field but hit just 24 percent of their long-range baskets. To counter, the visitors shot 52 percent (13-25) from long range.

The Yellow Jackets travel to Colorado Christian on Friday for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
