Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Yellow Jackets softball team traveled south to begin their weekend series at UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday, Mar. 15, as they took on the Mountain Lions in a doubleheader match-up.

UCCS defeated the Jackets (1-12, 1-7 RMAC) in both games, 10-2 in game one, and 8-0 in game two.

GAME 1

The Mountain Lions got off to a quick start in the first game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as starting pitcher Korey Kulpins went all six innings and gave up just two earned runs to the Jackets offensive attack on way to the 10-2 win.

Kulpins also struck out seven Yellow Jackets on way to the victory.  While the Jackets lost by eight runs, they were within just one run after scoring a run in both the third and fourth innings before UCCS scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth.

The Jackets cut the UCCS lead to just 3-2 heading into the sixth after C Sara Schmid had an RBI double in the third, which was followed by an RBI single to center field in the fourth inning to allow 2B Katie Campo to score.

Schmid was the leading hitter for the Jackets in the game as she finished 2-for-3 with the two RBIs.  Campo also went 2-for-3 from the plate, while 3B Alexis Shaffer had a walk and finished 1-of-2 in the game.

Kaitlin Farrar pitched 5.1 innings for the Jackets and gave up nine earned runs on 10 hits and had two strikeouts.

GAME 2

UCCS used the strong pitching effort of Jessica Belsterling to hold the Jackets to just a single hit before the game's end in a 5-innings, 8-0, victory for the Mountain Lions in the second game on Saturday afternoon.

The only hit of the game for the Yellow Jackets came from SS Ryan Cook, as she went 1-of-2 in the game with a single to center field in the top of the fourth inning.

UCCS again scored three runs in their opening inning of the contest, one in the second, and two in the fourth and fifth innings off of BHSU pitcher, Stefanie Witman, who went 4.2 innings and gave up eight earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

The leader for UCCS offensively was 2B Nikki Hoffman and Belsterling.  Hoffman hit a homerun to left-center field in the fourth inning and went 2-for-3 on the day with three RBIs to lead her team.  Belsterling meanwhile went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Tomorrow, the Yellow Jackets will be back on the diamond at UCCS for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. MT.
