RMAC Shootout WBB Tournament Headquarters | 2013-14 Team and Individual Stats
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team ended their impressive run in the RMAC Shootout on Saturday night after falling to No.1 overall seed and the nation's No. 4 team, Colorado Mesa University, 73-55.
After the sixth seeded Yellow Jackets made history by even making the eight-team playoff, the Jackets made a run for the ages passed No. 3 Fort Lewis in round one, No. 2 CSU-Pueblo in the semifinals, before coming up short to finish as the conference's second-best team to close the 2013-14 season.
The leading scorer in the championship game was none other than 2014 First Team All-RMAC guard in BHSU junior, Chelsey Biegler, who finished with 27 points on 7-of-11 shooting with four assists and three rebounds. Biegler also finished a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.
For her efforts throughout the tournament, Biegler was named to the RMAC Shootout All-Tournament team alongside fellow junior guard, Dakota Barrie, who finished the evening again playing all 40 minutes and scoring five points and four rebounds with two assists.
In total for the tournament's three games, Bielger finished with 61 points (20.3 avg), 17 rebounds, and eight assits, while Barrie finished with 18 points (6.0 avg), 19 rebounds, and 15 assists.
The Yellow Jackets and the Mavericks had a back-and-forth first half from Brownson Arena as CMU used the deep ball early-and-often to help give them a slight, 37-32 lead at halftime. The Jackets continued their strong shooting performance in the first 20 minutes by again shooting over 50-percent in the half (11-20 FG, 55-pct).
The Mavericks picked up their defense in second half after limiting the Jackets to just six total field goals on way to a 23-point second. The Jackets did capitalize from the free-throw line after going 17-of-18 from the charity stripe to help keep them within striking distance the majority of the final 20 minutes.
CMU's five starters were the only Mavericks to score in the game as all but one of their starters played 38 minutes on the night. Christen Lopez led the charge for her team with 25 points, as Sharaya Selsor had 19 and Aubry Boehme added 15 points.
As a team, the Mavericks made 11 3-pointers on 26 attempts (42.3-pct). CMU shot 47.3-percent for the game, while going 26-of-55 on field goals. The Yellow Jackets meanwhile shot almost 49-percent on the night (17-35 FG), while going 4-of-12 (33.3-pct) from the 3-point line. The Jacket bench again was called upon as they produced 13 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Shanna Halalilo played 22 minutes off the bench and finished with six points and three boards. BHSU senior, Calli Bechtel, capped off her Yellow Jacket career with four points and four rebounds on 30 minutes. The Yellow Jacket future is bright, as evidence of the quality minutes true freshman, Gabby Haefs, and redshirt freshman, Brittnay Curl contributed to the team throughout the entire tournament. Haefs and Curl each played 15 minutes in the championship game and combined for seven points and two rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets finished the season 15-14 overall, and 14-11 in conference play. BHSU's record from the Young Center was 9-5, and they went 5-8 on the road. Outside of their tournament run, the Yellow Jackets' most successful streak came from Dec. 14 through Jan. 9, where the Jackets won 7-straight games.
