Box Score 2 SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Yellow Jacket softball team (0-9, 0-4 RMAC) finally were able to take the field on Sunday afternoon as they welcome the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks to open up play at home this season.
The Skyhawks won game the first game by a score of 10-2 in six innings, and also were victorious in the second game, 15-9.
GAME 1
FLC got out to a hot start to begin the weekend in the opening game of the doubleheader after scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. After four more runs in the top of the fourth, the Skyhawks pushed their lead to 8-0 before the Jackets got on the board in the fifth inning.
Victoria Johnson pitched all six innings for FLC to limit the Jackets to five scoreless innings and seven hits. The highlight for the Jackets was senior SS Ryan Cook, who had an homerun in the fifth inning. Cook finished 2-of-3 on the day.
The second run of the fifth came as 1B Rebecca Green had an RBI single in her lone hit of the game that scored CF Brooke Grant. Grant finished the game 2-of-3 from the plate that included a double.
The Yellow Jacket pitchers surrendered just five hits in the game, but walked a total of 10 batters by the end of the sixth. Jackets sophomore, Kaitlin Farrar, went 3.2 innings and gave up seven earned runs on two hits with six walks and a strikeout. Savanah Eckhardt went 2.1 innings and surrendered just two earned runs on three hits to go with four walks and a strikeout.
FLC's offensive leader was DH Kamali'i Peneku, who had three RBIs after hitting a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
GAME 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Jackets jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first two innings. Pitcher, Brittnay Geersen, had an RBI single to get the Jackets on the board first, which was followed by a 2B Katie Campo RBI single later in the first.
The Jackets continued in the second as RF Cassie Smith singled to score LF Nia Shumpert, while 3B Alexis Shaffer knocked home Smith to close the second inning. FLC responded with a run in the third and fourth innings before taking the lead after seven runs in the seventh. Both teams put four runs on the board in the sixth, before the Skyhawks closed the game out after scoring two runs in the seventh inning.
Campo had the day's second homer of the weekend for the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the sixth, which scored C Erica Everson and Shaffer. Campo led the Jackets with a total of four RBIs after going 2-of-4 in the game.
Shaffer finished 4-of-5 from the plate for BHSU with one RBI and two runs scored. Everson and Geersen finished with two hits, while Shumpert finished 3-of-4 with a run scored. FLC was led by both Missy Fundora and Chelsea Rodriguez who both hit homeruns in the game.
In total, the Skyhawks offense produced 23 hits as the Jackets had 18 against FLC pitchers Katie Watkins and Kiley Raica. Waktins went 5.1 innings and gave up four earned runs on 11 hits as Raica went 1.1 innings and gave up five earned runs. Geersen pitched 5.1 innings for the Jackets and was charged for six earned runs on 15 hits.
Both teams will square off again tomorrow on Monday, Mar. 10, with another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
