DURANGO, Colo. – The Black Hills State volleyball team fell 3-0 to Fort Lewis Saturday afternoon in Durango, Colorado.
The host Skyhawks took all three sets 25-14, 27-25 and 26-24, improving to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets fall to 3-8, 1-2.
After FLC took the first set, the second set looked like it was going to be much of the same for the Skyhawks but the Yellow Jackets turned an 18-9 deficit into a 21-20 lead.
Down 18-9, the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a serving error to begin a run by scoring 12 of the next 14 points. Brynn Eckhardt had a pair of blocks while Sammi Ausborn utilized a service ace while Meghan Sipe, Fehrin Ward and Danielle Torpey each had kills in the run.
Black Hills State took the 21-20 lead on a kill from Torpey.
However, the Skyhawks battled right with the Yellow Jackets as the two squads traded the leads until two-in-a-row came from FLC for the 27-25 win.
The third set was exactly like the final seven points of the second set with neither team grabbing a commanding lead. The two squads jumped back and forth with nine ties and seven lead changes.
With the score knotted at 22-apiece, the Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead behind an attack error from FLC and a kill from Shelby Mayer.
Sitting at set point, 24-22, Black Hills State could not get over the final hump as the Skyhawks score four-straight points to take the set and the match, 26-24.
After playing their first 11 matches on the road, the Yellow Jackets will make their home debut on Thursday hosting New Mexico Highlands at 7 p.m. in the newly renovated Young Center Gymnasium.
