ARVADA, Colo. – A career-best day from quarterback Ward Anderson was not enough to overcome the 17th ranked team in the country as the Black Hills State University football team fell 48-21 to Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon.
Anderson threw for 429 yards, a career best, completing 33-of-50 passes and three touchdowns. The Yellow Jackets loss drops them to 2-2 and 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Colorado Mines improves to 4-0 and 2-0 in the RMAC.
Avery Llewellyn, the RMAC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year, opened up the scoring for CSM with a 25-yard field goal with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter.
The Orediggers tacked on another score with a 90-yard touchdown reception from Justin Dvorak to Diamond Gillis with 11:29 remaining in the second quarter.
The Yellow Jackets used a five-play, 75-yard drive culminating with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ward Anderson to Bradley Adamson with 9:41 left in the first half to pull within 10-7.
However, Colorado Mines kept the pressure on scoring two more times in the first half, first a four-yard touchdown reception then with a 51-yard field goal to enter the intermission with a 20-7 lead.
In the first drive coming out of the break, Anderson found Phydell Paris for a 64-yard touchdown to pull the Yellow Jackets within six points at 20-14. The drive consisted of six plays for 87 yards.
The two squads traded touchdowns as Colorado Mines used 12 plays for 75 yards over 3:45 to push the lead to 27-14 with a nine-yard touchdown reception to Ty Young.
Just 43 seconds later, Black Hills State answered back with a 73-yard touchdown reception from Anderson to Jerome Krysl, once again pulling the Yellow Jackets to within six points at 27-21.
However that was all the offense Black Hills State would have as the 17th ranked Mines showed their power en route to the 48-21 victory.
