MBB: Yellow Jackets Fall Just Short to No. 12 UCCS, 78-77

SPEARFISH, S.D. – A late charge in the final two minutes fell short for the Black Hills State University men's basketball team as the Yellow Jackets fell 78-77 to No. 12 University of Colorado Colorado Springs Friday in the Young Center.

Down 72-62 with 2:08 remaining in the game, Wyatt Krogman hit a jumper to begin the last run at the Mountain Lions. The Yellow Jackets forced Alex Koehler into a turnover, then drew a foul where Riley Ryan hit a pair of free throws with 1:26 on the clock.

Black Hills State then forced Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, Derrick White, into a turnover. Ryan stepped into a 3-point basket, swishing the trey with 46 ticks left in the game.

After a time out, Black Hills State fouled Tim Billingsley who sank both free throws to push the UCCS lead back to five points.

After unable to convert on the next Yellow Jacket possession, the Green and Gold sent White to the free throw line, who hit one-of-two to give the Mountain Lions a 75-69 lead with 31 seconds.

Grabbing White's missed rebound, Wyatt Krogman sprinted down the court but was unable to convert the 3-point try. Myles Henry grabbed the rebound and put in the short jumper with 13 seconds left, down 75-71.

The Yellow Jackets again fouled to stretch the game out as long as possible. Darius Pardner made one-of-two from the charity strip for the 76-71 lead. Taking just five seconds off the clock, Brady Bisgaard nailed a trey from the corner, pulling the Yellow Jackets within two points of the No. 12 team in the nation.

Needing to foul again, White went back to the free throw line giving UCCS a four-point lead with just five seconds left in the game.

As time was expiring, Tate Hilgenkamp sank a 3-point basket as the Yellow Jackets fell 78-77.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-13 overall and 4-8 in RMAC action. The Mountain Lions, the preseason favorite for the RMAC Championship, improve to 16-2, 10-2.

Bisgaard led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 5-of-6 from long range. Brody Brisk and Ryan each scored 14 points for the Green and Gold. The Mountain Lions were led by Alex Welsh with 26 points while Derrick White added 25.

Black Hills State won the rebound game, 36-27, led by eight from Ryan. Krogman had a game-high five assists.

The Yellow Jackets return to the Young Center Saturday for a 6 p.m. matchup with CSU-Pueblo.
