RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rivalries have their ups and downs and sometimes get hearts broken. Friday night the Black Hills State University men's basketball experienced heartbreak in a 73-70 loss to South Dakota School of Mines.

Jaiesean Jackson hit a layup with 15 seconds remaining to stretch a 71-70 SDSM&T lead to 73-70. The Hardrocker defense then forced a 25-foot three from the Yellow Jackets, which hung on the back iron and looped out at the buzzer as the two rivals split their two meetings this year.

The Yellow Jackets won 72-67 in overtime on November 17.

With South Dakota Mines holding a 45-43 lead midway through the second half, Wyatt Krogman sank a 3-point basket from the top of the arc for the first Yellow Jacket lead since early in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets (4-11) then pushed ahead 48-45 on a Nick Ongarato bucket to complete a 9-2 Black Hills State run. The two squads continued to trade baskets in a contest that had the look and a feel of a heated rivalry.

In all, the two teams had 12 lead changes and 10 ties as the game continued to the wire.

After the Hardrockers (5-13) regained the lead, at 65-62, Brady Bisgaard sank a trey to knot the game with 1:57 remaining. Konnor Kulas answered back with two of his game-high 21 points to give SD Mines a lead they wouldn't relinquish in the closing seconds.

Myles Henry led the Yellow Jackets with 12 points as Yoshio Allen added 11 points. Wyatt Krogman had a double-double of 10 points and a season-high 10 assists. Kulas was one of the Hardrockers in double figures as Andrew Rebol had 17 points and Travis Shock added 12.

The Yellow Jackets had their best shooting night of the season at 53.1 percent (26-49) including 40 percent from long range but SDSM&T answered with a 58 percent  (29-50) shooting performance. 

The Yellow Jackets travel to Chadron State Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
