PUEBLO, Colo—Road warrior isn't a phrase that aligns with the Black Hills State University volleyball team. The Yellow Jackets have another opportunity to notch their first road victory of the 2015 season at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday night.
BHSU and CSU-Pueblo both sported a 6-12 record prior to the contest, but were on opposite ends of the momentum swing. The Thunderwolves rode a two-game winning streak that includes victories over Westminster and South Dakota Mines while BHSU was in the midst of a two-game losing skid.
CSU-Pueblo built their momentum with a 3-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets on Saturday night. BHSU falls to 6-13, 3-8 RMAC while the Thunderwolves improve to 7-12, 5-6 RMAC.
CSU-Pueblo 3, Yellow Jackets 0
It took the Thunderwolves three different lead changes to stave off the Yellow Jackets for good. The last lead change occurred when a Yellow Jacket service error gave CSU-Pueblo a 5-4 lead.
Despite the fact BHSU couldn't command the lead, they tied the Thunderwolves 5-5, 6-6, 9-9, 12-12, and 13-13 before a pair of Melissa Nichols kills helped widened the margin to 20-14.
Kenzie Kazmer, Cassidy Steele, Danielle Torpey and Shelby Mayer each registered a kill to narrow the Thunderwolves' lead to 22-21. Oni Lattin responded with two kills down the stretch to lock up a 25-21 win for CSU-Pueblo in set one.
Mariangel Perez capitalized on three consecutive service aces that paced the Thunderwolves in their 13-6 lead to open set two. It was a margin BHSU couldn't rebound from in a 25-19 loss.
Perez continued her superb play in set three when her, along with Melissa Nichols, each notched a pair of kills to help CSU-Pueblo take an 8-3 lead.
Brynn Eckhardt proved to be a double threat in set three as she added three kills the remainder of the match to help BHSU get within the Thunderwolves 24-20. Lattin put those dreams to rest with a kill to secure a 25-20 CSU-Pueblo win.
Mayer led BHSU with seven kills while Eckhardt tallied 25 assists.
The Yellow Jackets will kickoff a four-game home stand on Friday, October 23 against Fort Lewis College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
