SPEARFISH, S.D.—The Black Hills State University volleyball team was looking to build their second winning streak of the season against Adams State University on Saturday night. BHSU's other winning streak happened to be at home when they defeated South Dakota Mines and Chadron State on October 6 and 9.
The Adams State University Grizzlies came off a 3-0 win against South Dakota Mines on Friday night and were looking to extend their winning streak to five games. They accomplished that mission with a 3-0 victory over BHSU on Saturday night.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 7-14, 4-9 RMAC while the Grizzlies improve to 8-13, 7-6 RMAC.
Adams State 3, Yellow Jackets 0
BHSU led as much as 11-8 in set one, thanks to Danielle Torpey's three kills. The Grizzlies responded with an enormous run that saw them notch eight unanswered points en route to a 16-11 lead, which forced Yellow Jacket head coach Kristin Carmichael to use a timeout.
The timeout proved to help BHSU catch their breath and re-group, but the Grizzly lead was too much. Shelby Mayer notched three kills to end the set, but it wasn't enough in a 25-17 loss.
The Yellow Jackets found themselves in cold water in set two as Adams State jumped to an 11-3 lead.
BHSU stormed back and narrowed the margin to 22-20, thanks to back-to-back Grizzly attack errors. However, the Yellow Jackets committed a pair of errors down the stretch to help Adams State propel to a 25-22 victory in set two.
The Yellow Jackets capitalized down the stretch in set three. Down 22-20, four straight Adams State attack errors helped BHSU come back and take a 24-22 lead. Unfortunately, three Yellow Jacket attack errors at the tail end gave the Grizzlies a 27-25 win in set three.
Mayer's nine kills led BHSU.
The Yellow Jackets will return to the Young Center on Friday, October 30 against Westminster College (Utah). Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
