DENVER, COLO. —The Black Hills State University volleyball team entered the back end of their two-game road stand with a chip on their shoulder. Coming off a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to UCCS on Friday night, the Yellow Jackets knew they had a lot to prove against the MSU-Denver Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon.
BHSU is winless on the road this season and must find the win column. All Yellow Jacket wins came either at home or on a neutral floor. The Roadrunners entered the contest with a four-game winning streak and extended it to five with a 3-0 victory over BHSU.
BHSU falls to 4-10 1-5 RMAC while MSU-Denver improves to 8-8, 5-2 RMAC.
MSU-Denver 3, Yellow Jackets 0
Brynn Eckhardt and Danielle Torpey each contributed kills to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 lead in set one. BHSU's lead slowly deteriorated and MSU-Denver took the control of the driver's seat for good when Michaela Smith's kill gave the Roadrunners a 6-5 advantage.
BHSU managed to tie the Roadrunners 8-8, but couldn't jump over the edge. MSU-Denver widened their lead as the set progressed to secure a 25-15 win in set one.
BHSU hung tight with the Roadrunners in set two as there were seven different lead changes. Summer Greager gave MSU-Denver the lead for good when her kill made the score 20-19.
Three BHSU attack errors haunted them own the stretch in a 25-21 loss in set two.
The Yellow Jackets couldn't rebound from a hot Roadrunner start that saw them jump to a 5-1 lead in set three. A pair of Fehrin Ward kills helped BHSU get within one point of MSU-Denver at 6-5 and 7-6.
BHSU didn't have an answer for Ryan Hoerdemann, who added five kills from that point forward to help MSU-Denver cruise past the Yellow Jackets 25-14 in set three.
Kazmer paced BHSU with six kills in the match.
The Yellow Jackets will return to the Young Center on Tuesday, October 6 when they face South Dakota School of Mines. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
