The Saints, who played Friday's contest as an exhibition, were held to 48 points under their season average over three games but still managed to shoot 50 percent from the field. The Yellow Jackets shot 37.3 percent from the field but still placed four players in double-figures.
Riley Ryan led the charge with 16 points while Nick Ongarato and newcomer Max Mueller each tallied 13 points while another newcomer Fraser Malcolm had 10 points.
The Yellow Jackets fell behind 28-18 with just under four minutes remaining in the first half before entering the intermission behind by five, 32-27.
Black Hills State methodically continued to chip away at the PC lead, pulling within two points multiple times before knotting the game at 50-50 on a pair of Patrick Mendes free throws with 11:01 remaining.
The Green and Gold then took their first lead of the game since the opening minutes on a Malcolm 3-point basket. Wyatt Krogman dished to Malcolm for one of his team-high four assists and the 55-54 advantage.
Donnell Minton helped the Saints (3-0) regain the lead on two of his game-high 23 points. A quick 5-2 Yellow Jacket run helped BHSU claim a 61-58 lead when Tate Hilgenkamp sank a shot from long-range with 7:29 remaining but the momentum could not get swung in either direction as the two squads played hot potato with the lead.
With time winding down and the game knotted at 73-all, Ryan went 1-of-2 on a pair of free throws for the 74-73 Yellow Jacket lead. On the ensuing possession, the Saints hit what would be the game-winner with 1:52 remaining on a Calvin Carr layup.
Neither team would make a basket the rest of the way, including two Yellow Jacket (0-1) chances in the closing seconds. First Ryan had a chance but was heavily guarded where Malcolm was able to maneuver the quick rebound and put back but could not find the bottom of the net.
The Yellow Jackets held the edge in rebounding, 36-30, a feat that happened just three times a season ago. Ryan had a game-high eight rebounds while Mueller added six.
The Saints were led with Minton's 23 points while Carr had 14 with Frank Cimino and Brandon Bradford each contributing 13.
The Yellow Jackets return to action in the Young Center Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against Johnson and Wales. JWU fell 77-67 to South Dakota Mines Friday night.
