MBB: Krogman Ties Career-Best 16 Points as Jackets Cruise to Victory

SPEARFISH, S.D. – After placing five players in double figures, led by Wyatt Krogman with 16, the Black Hills State University men's basketball team rolled to an 83-61 victory Saturday night in the Donald E. Young Center.

Krogman tied his career-best with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting while tallying six assists in the effort.

The Yellow Jackets (1-1) grabbed the lead early on with a quick 18-3 spurt which was aided by four 3-point baskets. The Wildcats (4-3) then went on a 17-5 run to pull within three points at 23-20.

Black Hills State withstood the charge and entered halftime with a 38-28 lead.

In the second half, the Green and Gold methodically continued to build the lead until reaching 23 points on a Collin Smith jumper in the paint with 53 seconds remaining.

Black Hills State led from start to finish while controlling all facets of the game including shooting percentage (46.8 percent to 40 percent), 3-point field goal percentage (41.4 percent to 19 percent), free throw percentage (76.5 percent to 42.9 percent), rebounds (44-34), assists (13-7) and steals (5 to 3).

Outside of Krogman's 16 points, Riley Ryan tallied 14 points, Nick Ongarato 13 points while Patrick Mendes and Fraser Malcolm each scored 10 apiece.

Johnson & Wales only played five players' double-digit minutes, with Jontrell Herman leading the way with 19 points. Andrew Romero, III scored 18 points while Andrew Bonner tallied 10 points.

In contrast, all 10 Yellow Jackets to see the floor played double-digit minutes, with no one seeing more than 27 minutes which were Krogman and Ryan.

For the second-straight game, the Yellow Jackets out-rebounded their opponent, a feat that was accomplished just three times last season, showing the improvement head coach Jeff Trumbauer's squad is seeing in his second season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets.

Black Hills State travels to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, for a Tuesday night contest. The game, which tips at 7 p.m., will be played as an exhibition game for the Yellow Jackets while GCU will have it count against its record.
