Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – Overtime contests and close games have become much of the norm for the Black Hills State University men's basketball team and that was the case in a double-overtime 86-79 victory over Colorado Christian Saturday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (9-17, 7-12 RMAC) played in its seventh overtime game of the year and overcame a nine-point deficit with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Yoshio Allen began a Yellow Jacket run, making one-of-two free throws. After Riley Ryan grabbed the offensive rebound, he dished to Allen for the lay-in to pull the Yellow Jackets within six points with 3:20 on the clock.
Wyatt Krogman sank a pair of free throws before Michael Brown tried to stop the Green and Gold run with 2:20 remaining when he sank a basket for the 59-53 CCU (12-13, 9-10 RMAC) lead. However on the ensuing Yellow Jacket possession, Brody Brisk found Brady Bisgaard for the open 3-point basket with 2:00 minutes on the clock.
With 1:06 left, Allen made another layup to pull the Green and Gold within one point while be fouled. Although Allen missed the and-one free throw but again Ryan grabbed the rebound. After looking for the open shot, Nick Ongarato sank a long-range basket for the first Yellow Jacket lead since early in the second half.
The two squads would then battle back-and-forth over the final minute leading to the stalemate and first overtime with 64-all score.
The first extra period played out exactly like the final minute of regulation as the Yellow Jackets would make a basket, the Cougars would answer right back forcing the second overtime at 73-73.
After the Yellow Jackets made the opening basket and CCU answered right back for a 75-75 score, it was all Black Hills State as Riley Ryan went on a 9-1 run for the Yellow Jackets. He made two treys and three free throws to push the Yellow Jacket lead to 84-76 with 38 seconds remaining.
His second 3-pointer came as a desperation shot as time on the shot clock was winding down. Unable to find anyone to pass to, he threw up the shot that somehow found the nylon of the net.
Colorado Christian could only muster three more points as the Yellow Jackets prevailed 86-79 much to the delight of the Young Center crowd. Ironically, the Yellow Jackets largest lead of the game came in the second overtime when they had an eight-point advantage.
The Yellow Jackets placed four in double figures paced by Ryan's 21 points. He also had a game-high seven rebounds. Ongarato scored 15 points while Allen added 14. Bisgaard was the fourth in double digits with 11 points.
The Cougars placed five in double digits led by Zach McLemore with 17 points off the bench.
The two squads delighted the crowd to 13 lead changes and nine ties while Black Hills State shot 50.0 percent (25-50) from the field while CCU shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the field.
Black Hills State closes out its road portion of the 2014-15 season traveling to Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday. Both contests are slated for 7:30 p.m.
