MBB: Colorado Mesa Downs Yellow Jackets in Overtime

Box Score

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – An NCAA-era record of 17 made 3-point baskets for Black Hills State University were not enough to overcome 46 second half points from Colorado Mesa University in an 83-75 overtime setback Friday night.

It was the sixth overtime game of the year for the Yellow Jackets as they fall to 7-16 overall and 5-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Mesa improves to 15-7, 10-6.

Of the NCAA-era school record 17-made long-range baskets, Nick Ongarato, Brady Bisgaard and Brody Brisk each hit four apiece. Bisgaard and Ongarato finished with a team-high 14 points, apiece.

A blistering-hot first half from long-range allowed the Yellow Jackets to take a 10-8 deficit and turn it into a 43-22 halftime lead. Black Hills State hit 10 long-range baskets at a 63.1 percent clip while closing the half on a 35-12 run.

Coming out of the break, the Yellow Jackets picked right up where they left off and pushed a 52-24 lead behind a pair of 3-point baskets from Ongarato and another one from Bisgaard.

However a 25-1 run by the Mavericks cut the Green and Gold lead to just 53-49 with 8:39 remaining in the game. A pair of Yoshio Allen free throws and a trey from Ongarato, followed by a layup from Allen stopped the bleeding for a 60-51 lead with just under five minutes remaining.

The Mavericks continued to claw away at the Yellow Jacket lead, and grabbed the lead 64-63 on a Joe Kiely layup with 1:50 remaining.

Black Hills State answered right back when Bisgaard hit Riley Ryan for a long-range basket and a 66-64 lead. On the ensuing CMU possession, Juilian Vasquez scored on a jumper, knotting the game at 66-66. Each squad would then hit a basket sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, CMU jumped out to a 76-72 and continued to roll, as the Yellow Jackets were unable to recover their stroke that saw them shoot well over 50 percent in the first half.  The Mavericks prevailed in the 83-75 victory.

Following Ongarato and Bisgaard's 14 points, Brody Brisk scored 12 points and Yoshio Allen added 10. Wyatt Krogman tied a season-high with 10 assists and has dished at least five assists in six out of his last eight games.

Julian Vasquez scored a game-high 24 points while Ryan Stephan added 22 points for Colorado Mesa.

The Yellow Jackets face former head coach Brad Schaefer and Western State Colorado University at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night.
