SPEARFISH, S.D.--The Black Hills State University softball team entered their contests with Colorado School of Mines and Adams State University sporting more confidence. The Yellow Jackets came off their first RMAC victories of the 2015 season last weekend at Chadron State while looking to make up ground in the standings.
BHSU defeated Colorado Mines 12-8 in game one before falling to Adams State University 7-3.
The split gives BHSU a 4-11, 3-6 RMAC record.
Yellow Jackets 12, Colorado School of Mines 8
Colorado Mines took the first lead of the game when they exploded with four runs in the second inning. RBI-hits from Paige Noehring and Sonoma Toot paced an Oredigger second inning that saw them take a 4-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets responded in the third inning when Katie Campo and Rebecca Green led the inning off with back-to-back hits. Campo came around to score on a Oredigger error to narrow the margin to 4-1. BHSU took advantage of another Oredigger error when Nia Shumpert and Green touched home plate to make the score 4-3.
Shumpert continued her dominance in the fourth inning when she roped a bases-loaded single to tie the game 4-4. A Katherine Drake sacrifice fly followed by Erica Everson's two-run double gave BHSU a 7-4 lead.
Back-to-back RBI-hits from Dana Gallegos and Sonoma Toot in the fourth inning narrowed the Yellow Jacket lead to 7-6. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the fifth inning when Campo's RBI-single drove in Claire Fergusson to make the score 8-5.
After Colorado Mines added a run in the fifth inning to make the score 8-7, BHSU scored three runs in the sixth inning. A Savanah Eckhardt RBI-single, and a Kelsea Nash ground-rule two-run double made the score 11-7.
BHSU and Colorado Mines traded a run in the seventh inning to make the score 12-8.
Carlee Beck pitched a complete game for BHSU. She gave up eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits.
Green and Nash led BHSU at the plate with two hits.
Adams State University 7, Yellow Jackets 3
The Grizzlies took a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Alexandria Moore and Erika Ecsedy each torched an RBI-single to pace the Grizzlies in the second inning.
Moore led off the fourth inning when she was hit by a pitch. Kalin Johnson later walked to put runners on base for Erica Haugum, who laced a two-run single to extend the Grizzly lead to 6-0.
Tayler Else poured more salt on the Yellow Jacket wound with an RBI-single up the middle to make the score 7-0 in the fifth inning. The Yellow Jackets responded in the seventh inning when Cassie Smith, Kayla Hallock, and Shumpert each hit RBI-singles to narrow the Adams State lead to 7-3.
Kaitlin Farrar took the loss for BHSU. She allowed four runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
Smith led the Yellow Jackets offensively with two hits.
BHSU returns to action tomorrow when they face Adams State at 10:00 a.m., and Colorado School of Mines at 12:00 p.m.
