Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – Behind a career-best 19 points for Wyatt Krogman, the Black Hills State University men's basketball team has won its third-straight game with an 88-79 victory over Western State Colorado Saturday night in Gunnison, Colorado.
The Yellow Jackets have their first three-game win streak since winning three in a row in January of 2012 and improve to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Western State, coached by former Yellow Jacket head coach Bradd Schafer, falls to 3-13, 2-8.
The Yellow Jackets, up 7-6, went on a 16-5 run including a 10-0 run to start it off and open a 23-11 lead in the first half. The 10-0 burst started with back-to-back layups for the Yellow Jackets, one from Krogman and the other from Patrick Mendes. The Mendes layup turned into an old-fashioned three-point play when he sank the free throw after being fouled.
The run continued on a Nick Ongarato jump shot and concluded on a Max Mueller 3-pointer. The 16-5 run concluded on another Mueller trey, this one fed from Ongarato.
Using another streak, this time a 13-1 run, the Yellow Jackets opened a 41-18 lead over WSCU, the largest gap in the game. This run was jump started by a dunk from Mueller when Krogman hit him for the easy two points, and concluded on a Mendes free throw.
Black Hills State would enter the intermission break with a 44-24 lead.
The second half included much of the same for BHSU, never allowing the Mountaineers to closer than nine points in the closing seconds leading to the final score of 88-79.
Ongarato tied Krogman with a team-high 19 points while Max Mueller picked up the first Yellow Jackets double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Patrick Mendes also scored in double digits with 10 points. Krogman added seven assists to help his league leading 5.1 assist per game average.
The Mountaineers were led by CJ Schutt with 20 points while Danny Hopkins added 17.
The Green and Gold added a season-best four blocks to help with its defensive effort, while grabbing 43 rebounds, compared to WSCU's 37.
The Yellow Jackets continue RMAC action Saturday at Colorado State-Pueblo. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
