MBB: Hoopsters' Score Fourth-Straight Win

Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Black Hills State University men's basketball team has its first four-game win streak since the 2010-11 season after defeating Colorado State University-Pueblo 82-62 Saturday night in Pueblo, Colorado.

The win gives the Yellow Jackets a 9-6 record and 7-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, a mark that puts them at top of the Rocky Division along with next week's opponent MSU Denver and Colorado Mesa. Colorado State-Pueblo falls to 11-6, 7-4.

Down 10-5, the Yellow Jacket embarked on a 14-0 run to gain a lead they would not relinquish throughout the remainder of the contest. The run began with a Nick Ongarato free throw and was aided by a Wyatt Krogman 3-point basket.

Black Hills State grabbed its first lead of the game when Riley Ryan made back-to-back baskets and a 13-10 score. The streak ended with a pair of 3-point baskets, one from Fraser Malcolm and a second one from Krogman. When the run concluded, the Yellow Jackets led 19-10 with 13:23 remaining in the first half.

With 1:42 remaining in the first stanza, Max Mueller hit the Green and Gold's seventh 3-point basket of the half and largest lead of the half at 36-19. The Thunderwolves would cut into the lead before the buzzer and the 36-23 halftime score.

The second half saw CSUP cut the lead down to nine points when Chris Golden sank one-of-two free throws with 11:58 remaining in the game. However, Tate Hilgenkamp answered with a Yellow Jacket 3-point make when Patrick Mendes found him for one of his season-best six assists.

As time wound down, Black Hills State benefitted from the charity stripe with 12 of its final 17 points coming from the free throw line, leading to the 82-62 victory. The four-game streak is its longest since winning 10-in-a-row to close out the regular season, win the Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament and enter the NAIA National Tournament in February and March of 2011.

Krogman tied his career-high with 19 points, a mark that he set last night in the victory over Western State. Ongarato and Ryan each added 18 points while Mendes had 10 points and his season-best six assists.

The Thunderwolves were led by Golden with his 19 points while Will Newman added 11.

The Yellow Jackets won the rebound battle 38-34 and was led by Malcolm with a season-best eight rebounds. A major aid to the Yellow Jackets victory were the 21 points off 16 turnovers.

The Yellow Jackets return to the Young Center Friday night to host MSU Denver in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
