Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – Behind four players in double figures and a second-half surge of 48 points, the Black Hills State University men's basketball team defeated Regis University 75-65 Saturday night in the Young Center.
Black Hills State improves to 6-6 on the season and 4-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as Nick Ongarato had a near double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds while Riley Ryan scored 15 points while Patrick Mendes and Max Mueller each scored 10 points apiece.
Regis falls to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the loop as Dexter Sienko completed the double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Regis raced out to a 15-4 lead in the opening minutes of the first half and maintained the lead throughout as the Green and Gold never led in the first half. The tide turned when the Rangers held their largest lead of the game at 47-35 with 15:02 remaining in the game as the Yellow Jackets embarked on an 18-4 run that began with a Tate Hilgenkamp 3-point basket.
Regis answered with a jumper from Elijah Sanders but Ongarato scored back-to-back buckets for the 49-42 deficit. Sienko hit a jump shot for Regis to stop the mini run but Ryan had the answer on a jumper. After Ongarato sank a pair of free throws, Mueller sank a wide open 3-point basket as the Yellow Jackets trailed by just two points with 11:13 on the clock.
The game-tying basket came from Fraser Malcom as Kroman dished one of his five assists to the cutting Malcolm. After forcing Regis into a tough 3-point shot, Mueller made a jumper for the Yellow Jackets first lead of the game at 53-51 and 9:47 showing on the clock.
Black Hills State never trailed again, opening a lead as large as 11 points when Mendes sank a pair of free throws for a 66-55 lead with 4:01 remaining in the game.
The Yellow Jackets survived a rare off-night from deep, shooting just 4-of-16 from long-range with key stops throughout the second half and scoring 12 points off Regis turnovers.
Black Hills State completes the season sweep over Regis, after having defeated the Rangers 84-59 on December 12. The Yellow Jackets remain at home Saturday, hosting Chadron State with a 6 p.m. tipoff.
