MBB: Yellow Jackets Rally for 77-75 Victory over Chadron State

Box Score

SPEARFISH, S.D. – For the second-straight night, the Black Hills State University men's basketball team came from behind to claim a 77-75 victory over Chadron State Saturday night in the Young Center.

Down nine points with 6:28 remaining in the game, the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-0 run to grab a 67-64 with 2:55 on the clock. The run began on a jumper from Nick Ongartao and continued with a pair of free throws from Patrick Mendes.

With the momentum charging in the Yellow Jackets favor, Tate Hilgenkamp sank a 3-point basket as the Green and Gold were behind just two points with 4:34 on the clock. Max Mueller tied the game at 64-all on a jump shot and BHSU then took its first lead of the game when Wyatt Krogman scored on an old-fashioned 3-point play. Krogman drove the lane and was fouled by the Eagles defender. The foul shot gave the Yellow Jackets the 67-64.

Chadron State quickly knotted the game at 67-all as Sharif Black scored a 3-point basket on the ensuing possession. After forcing the Yellow Jackets into a tough offensive possession, Chadron State (5-8, 3-6 RMAC) took a 70-67 lead on a three-point play from Davante McCallam.

However, the Yellow Jackets gave CSC a taste of its own medicine with a 3-point basket on their next possession as Riley Ryan hit a streaking trey to knot the game at 70-all with 1:35 remaining.

Krogman went on to make one-of-two free throws to give the Yellow Jackets a lead it wouldn't relinquish in the final moments. However in the waning seconds Black Hills State up three points, Krogman had a momentum-slashing steal as he picked the pocket of Andre Miller with 10 seconds on the clock. That gave the Green and Gold two more free throws at a 77-72 lead.

Warren Gordon hit a 3-point basket with two seconds left to pull CSC with two points at 77-75 for the final score.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the RMAC, and move over .500 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for the first-time in the month of January since joining the league in the 2012-13 season.

Ryan led a quartet of Yellow Jackets in double-figures with 15 points as Patrick Mendes and Krogman each scored 13 and Ongarato 11 points. Mueller provided another solid game off the bench with seven points and a game-high eight rebounds and tallying two blocks. Chadron State was led by Gordon with 13 points.

Black Hills State, winners of two in a row and four of its last five games travel to Western State Colorado on Friday, facing former head coach Bradd Schafer in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff in Gunnison, Colorado.
