VB: Yellow Jackets Five Set Battle Not Enough to Overcome CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team fought hard taking the Colorado Christian University Cougars to five sets but lost the match, 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets took sets two and three while the Cougars took sets one, four and five.  The sets went as follows: 25-19, 25-23, 25-22, 25-19, and 15-12.

In set two, the Yellow Jackets found their momentum holding a lead at 11-9 until the Cougars tied it at 11-all.  The Cougars made it tough for BHSU keeping the lead until 22-all when Black Hills State was able to close it out at 25-23 with an attack error made by the Cougars offense.

In set three, the two teams were trading off points keeping it a close race until 19-all.  The Yellow Jackets scored three straight points off a kill by Ellise Lech and two attack errors made by Colorado Christian.  The Cougars came within one at 23-22 but BHSU scored two points to close the set out at 25-22 with a kill by Cheyenne Palu and another attack error by CCU.

The fifth and final set, the Yellow Jackets took a quick three-point lead, 4-1, but it was not enough to keep the Cougars from regaining momentum.  The Cougars regained the lead at 7-all to oust the Yellow Jackets, 15-12.

Laurel Lech saw her first match of action registering 23 assists and leading the offense for Black Hills State.  Brynn Eckhardt recorded a triple double with 10 kills, 21 assists and 16 digs.  Cheyenne Palu recorded 10 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Ellise Lech registered 10 kills as well while Danielle Torpey smacked down 13 kills of her own. 

On defense, Lacy Stevens and Sydney Ederhoff worked together registering 17 digs each.  Tara Hall recorded 10 digs as well. Alongside Stevens and Ederhoff, Cheyenne Palu recorded five blocks while Ellise Lech registered four blocks.

The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-11 on the season and 0-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action while the Cougars improve to 11-5 on the season and 4-2 in conference play.

Black Hills State side-steps out of conference play to face Augustana University in Rapid City at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4.
