SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason favorites beat the Black Hills State University football team 49-14 on Saturday afternoon in Lyle Hare Stadium.
Colorado State University – Pueblo forced a pair of turnovers and never allowed the offense to get into a rhythm, holding the Green and Gold to 204 yards of offense while the ThunderWolves totaled 456 yards.
The visitor's got the scoring started when Rex Dausin hit Larry Clark for a seven-yard touchdown pass, capping a three-play, 18-yard drive. CSUP went up 14-0 when Dausin connected with K'Lan Anderson for an eight-yard strike.
Black Hills State (5-3, 5-3 RMAC) found an offensive punch on a four-play, 52-yard drive that was capped by a Phydell Paris six-yard run into the end zone early in the second quarter. The touchdown was set up by a Ryan Hommel pass to Shandon Jones for a 45-yard connection.
After the ThunderWolves (5-3, 4-2 RMAC) scored another touchdown for a 21-7 lead, the Yellow Jackets again pulled within seven points when Hommel connected with Eriq Swiftwater for a perfectly placed ball in the end zone from 28 yards out. Swiftwater was being hung out by the CSUP defender, and still made the play. After the Yellow Jackets declined the pass interference call to take the touchdown, Alberto Mastrovito sent the point after touchdown attempt through the uprights and the 21-14 score midway through the second quarter.
Colorado State – Pueblo tacked on two more touchdowns in the second quarter and entered the intermission with a 35-14 lead. They would add two more scores in the third quarter for the final score of 49-14.
Hommel led the way offensively with 122 yards passing on 10-of-16 throws. Zach Meyer came on in relief and threw 8-of-15 passes for completions and 44 yards. Shandon Jones was the top target, taking three receptions for 58 yards.
Defensively Travis Groves totaled 13 tackles as Luis Bach had nine tackles and two for a loss. Michael Deichert also tallied a tackle for a loss.
Dausin threw 14-of-19 passes for 169 yards and Fradlet Dort totaled 106 yards on the ground for CSUP.
Black Hills State sidesteps out of RMAC on Saturday to face Dickinson State in a 4 p.m. kickoff. This will be the first meeting between the schools since 2010.Â
