SPEARFISH, S.D. – Round and round it went, then fell. The game-winning basket came from the hands of Jonas Anderson as the Black Hills State University men's basketball team defeated No. 18 Colorado School of Mines 57-56.

The Yellow Jackets fell behind by six points with 3:59 remaining in the game when Zach McLemore sank a 3-point basket followed by a free throw from Fraser Malcolm and an Anderson layup with 1:43 on the clock to knot the game at 54-all.

With the tension building, Colorado Mines Gokul Natesan stepped to the line with 43 seconds to put pressure on the Yellow Jackets who were now down two at 56-54 with time winding down.

That is when Zach McLemore sent a pass to Sam McCloud at the top of the key, followed by a quick pass to Anderson on the left elbow and sent his shot toward the basket. The ball swirled around the rim three times before finally falling through with 17 seconds on the clock, proving to be the game-winner after forcing CSM into two contested shots as time expired.

The victory is the first for the Black Hills State men's basketball program over a ranked opponent in the NCAA era as the Green and Gold improves to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Mines, the preseason RMAC favorite, falls to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the loop.

In all, the Yellow Jackets largest lead in the game was four points after a 6-0 run with a layup from Malcolm and four points from McLemore gave BHSU a 21-17 lead with 4:29 remaining in the first half. However, Colorado Mines would rebuild its lead back to five points on a 9-0 run before entering intermission with a 26-24 lead.

The wild second half tallied seven lead changes and five ties as the Yellow Jackets held the Orediggers to nearly 30 points below their season average. The Green and Gold defense also held CSM to a season-low 29.0 field goal percentage (18-of-62). Conversely, BHSU shot 46.5 percent (20-of-43) from the field including a scorching 52.2 percent in the second half. Black Hills State shot a season-best 47.1 (8-of-17) from 3-point range.

Leading the Yellow Jackets was McLemore with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting with four rebounds as Malcolm tallied 15 points and Mendes 11 points. Max Mueller grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as the Yellow Jackets out-rebounded CSM 39-34.

The reigning and Preseason RMAC Defensive Player of the Year Nateson led CSM with 16 points and tallied two steals and two rebounds. No other Oredigger scored in double figures.

Black Hills State plays game two of a four-game homestand Saturday against Colorado Christian University with a 6 p.m. tipoff from the Young Center.
