MBB: Pre-Holiday Schedule Closes with Regis and Chadron

THE GAME - Regis

  • The Yellow Jackets swept the Rangers in the 2015-16 season, meeting once before the break and once after. Inthe first meeting, at Regis, the Yellow Jackets won 84-59 while BHSU won 75-65 in Spearfish in early January. 
  • Regis enters with a 7-3 record on the but with a 1-3 RMAC record. The Rangers are coming off a split weekend, where they lost to MSU Denver 72-70 but rebounded the following night for a 72-70 victory over UCCS.
  • Dexter Sienko leads the team at 17.6 points per game while Jarrett Brodbeck has averaged 13.5 points and Kevin Metoyer 12.8 points per game. Sienko also leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game.
  • In common opponents, Regis defeated Johnson & Wales 90-64, but fell to Colorado Christian 83-81 and Colorado Mines 81-69.

THE GAME - Chadron State

  • Black Hills State and Chadron State split last year's meetings with the home squad winning each time. The first meeting on December 11 saw teh Eagles prevail 74-59 while the January 9 contest was a 77-75 Yellow Jacket victory.
  • Warren Gordon and Darius Polley lead the squad wtih 15.4 and 14.4 points per game, respectively. Austin Hall leads teh squad with 4.5 rebounds per game. 
  • Chadron State is 1-7 overall, with its lone victory being an overtime thriller, 75-71 over UCCS. In the game Warren Gordon scored a team-high 20 points. 

THE COACHES

  • Jeff Trumbauer enters his third season with the Yellow Jackets and owns a 23-39 record at BHSU. Overall, he owns a 120-126 record in his ninth season as a head coach. Trumbauer coached the first First Team All-RMAC performer from BHSU in Nick Ongarato last season.
  • Brady Bergeson is in his second year at Regis after coaching the squad to a 9-19 record in his first yera. He led Western Oregon to the NCAA Tournament in 2014-15.
  • Houston Reed is in his first year at Chadron State after beginning his head coaching career at Otero Junior College with a 174-140 record. During his playing days, Reed was a forward under legendary coach Don Meyer.

Home Sweet Home
Without owning a victory on the road in 2016-17, Black Hills State has found success on its home court with a 4-2 record in the Donald E. Young Center. The home hardwood advantage extends to more than victories with BHSU averaging 72.3 points per game in the Young Center with a +9.2 scoring margin. On the road, that is flipped to 49.5 points per game and a -23.5 scoring margin.

Hold Defense to less than 60 points, get win
Black Hills State has had a few trends in their four victories in 2016-17, with one of them being keeping the opponent under 60 points. Three of the four wins have come after BHSU held the opponents under 60 points, including the upset of No. 18 Colorado Mines.

1,000-point watch
Although he won't join the Yellow Jacket 1,000-point club until he reaches the milestone in a Yellow Jacket uniform, Zach McLemore has a chance to reach 1,000 post high school points as he tallied 787 points at Colorado Christian, including 441 points as a sophomore. Through 10 games with BHSU, McLemore has tallied a career total of 918 points.

Come From Behind Win
The victory over No. 18 Colorado Mines was the first of the season where the Yellow Jackets trailed at halftime but came away with the win. Overall, BHSU is 1-6 on the season when trailing at halftime.

Beating a Ranked Opponent
For the first time in the NCAA era, Black Hills State defeated a ranked opponent when it took down No. 18 Colorado Mines. In recent memory, BHSU was 0-1 in 2015-16 against ranked opponents and 0-6 in the 2014-15 season.

Suit Up!
Connor O'Hearn and Hoyt Nicholas originally expected to take a redshirt year in 2016-17, however due to injuries and different scenarios, the two will now suit up and be part of the active roster for the season. Nicholas received his first action of his career at UCCS with O'Hearn stepping on the floor against Colorado Mines.
