SPEARFISH, S.D. – Despite a valiant effort comeback in the fourth quarter, the Black Hills State University women's basketball team fell 62-54 to Regis University on Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets found their momentum in the second half of the game as they outshot Regis in the third 17 to 13. Trailing 27 to 19 at halftime, the Green and Gold came out in the third with a quick jumper by
Cheyanne Balster to come within six points.
In the final five minutes of the game, BHSU went on a 6-0 run to take the lead by two with
Keely Bertram hitting a shot from long range with an assist from
Julia Seamans. Mary Sigler of the Rangers responded back with a shot from downtown to go back up by one. BHSU took control one last time at 49-48 with Bertram knocking down two from the line.
The comeback effort from the Yellow Jackets was not enough to pull out the win. The Green and Gold went 42 percent (12-of-28) from the field in the second half. Regis countered shooting 52 percent (10-of-19) from the field in the second half.
Cheyanne Balster and
Julia Seamans led the way for the offense scoring 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Balster went 6-of-8 from the field in 23 minutes of action. Seamans went 3-of-10 from the field, 2-of-5 from downtown and 2-of-2 from the line and grabbed a season-high three steals.
Defensively,
Keely Bertram grabbed a team high six rebounds and tied her career-high three steals. Alongside Bertram,
Taylor Trohkimoinen grabbed five rebounds and had three assists.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 1-8 on the season and 1-4 in conference action while the Rangers improve to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Black Hills State returns Saturday night for its final home game of 2016 hosting Chadron State with tipoff set for 4 p.m.
