Box Score DENVER, Colo. – After claiming a big victory Friday night at UCCS, the Black Hills State University men's basketball team was unable to keep the momentum rolling as the Yellow Jackets fell 77-64 Saturday night to MSU Denver.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Yellow Jackets, who fall to 12-13 overall and 10-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Roadrunners improve to 18-9 and a Rocky Division-best 16-5 in the loop.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a seven-point lead in the opening minutes when Wyatt Krogman made a layup for a 12-5 score. The Roadrunners then whittled away at the lead and knotted the game at 14-all with 12:50 on the clock when DeShawn Phenix had a dunk.
From there, the home squad methodically built a lead, topping out at 13 points in the first half before entering intermission with a 36-26 lead.
During the second half, the Yellow Jackets could not overcome the Roadrunners as the lead hovered right around the 10-point deficit throughout the half. The closest the Yellow Jackets would get was on a 6-0 run midway through the half. Down 57-45, Fraser Malcolm began the run with a pair of free throws.
It continued and ended on back-to-back layups, one from Patrick Mendes and the other from Nick Ongarato. Ongarato's layup cut the lead down to six points at 57-51 with 8:19 remaining in the game.
However, MSUD responded and built its lead back up to 13 points, which included the final score of 77-64.
Nick Ongarato scored a team-high 17 points while Riley Ryan added 15 points for the Yellow Jackets. Tony Dobbinson scored a game-high 24 points for MSU Denver.
The Yellow Jackets still hold a chance at RMAC Shootout action, needing to win Wednesday at South Dakota Mines, followed by a loss by Colorado State-Pueblo at Western State coupled with a Colorado Christian loss at Colorado School of Mines. The Yellow Jackets game at South Dakota Mines is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena.
