SB: Yellow Jackets Sweep CSU-Pueblo in Walk-off Fashion Twice

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Black Hills State University reached a new milestone Saturday. The Yellow Jacket softball team swept a four-game series for the first time as the Yellow Jackets, who won a pair of games on Friday, won 9-8 and 6-5 in a pair of thrilling victories Saturday in Spearfish.

Facing Colorado State-Pueblo, the Yellow Jackets used drama in both games, coming from behind, down 8-2, then scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game, then won again in walk-off fashion in game two for the 6-5 win.

With the series sweep, the Yellow Jackets are 4-9 overall and 4-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Thunderwolves fall to 3-16, 2-6.

Game One: Black Hills State 9 Colorado State – Pueblo 8

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Down 2-0, the Yellow Jackets came to the plate, where Alex Wiley bunted for a single then stole second base. When Katie Campo walked, Wiley took advantage of the play and stole third.

Lauren Lesniak then singled down the left field line, scoring Wiley. Two batters later, and the bases loaded, Kelsea Nash drew a walked to score Alex Menke, who was pinch running for Lesniak.

CSU-Pueblo scratched a run across in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly, then utilized a five-run fifth inning to take a commanding 8-2 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Yellow Jackets increased the likelihood of their comeback when it scored two runs, by taking advantage of an error. Pamela Sakuma reached base on an error, advancing Stefanie Witman to second base. Both runners advanced a base on a Katelyn Odle single. Jordyn Ballard then drew a walk scoring Witman.

On a fielder's choice, Sakuma took off from third and scored.

After shutting down the Thunderwolves in the top of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets came to bat in the bottom half of the inning that a string of five-straight hits begin with a Campo triple to start the inning. She was then singled home by Lesniak. Jo-Jo Curry then singled into left center field. Witman came to the plate and doubled into right center, scoring Lesniak and pushing Curry to third base.

Sakuma came to the play with runners on second and third, and promptly singled and scoring Curry.

After a CSU-Pueblo pitching change, Odle stepped up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to the left fielder, scoring Witman to tie the game. Morgan Smith then stepped into the heroics role, singling up the middle scoring Sakuma for the walk-off 9-8 victory.

Wiley, Lesniak, Witman and Odle each had two hits in the game that saw the Yellow Jackets tally a season-best 12 hits in the game.

Game Two: Black Hills State 6 Colorado State-Pueblo 5

Down 2-0, the Yellow Jackets put a three-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, which was jump started by a Wiley single. She stole second base and was bumped over to third base on a Claire Fergusson single. Campo singled to score Wiley for the first Yellow Jacket run of the game.

With Campo at second and Fergusson at third, Curry dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Fergusson. Campo also came around to score thanks to a Thunderwolves error to give BHSU a 3-2 lead.

Starting in the top of the sixth, there were runs scored in each half inning, beginning with a CSUP run to knot the game at three.

In the bottom half, two more Yellow Jackets scored, thanks to a Lesniak home run, with Black Hills State regaining the lead at 5-3.

In the top of the seventh, the Thunderwolves pushed two more runs across the plate thanks to five hits, and left the bases loaded after Wiley got Kennedy Smith to ground out. The damage had been done though, with the game now tied at 5-5.

The Yellow Jackets went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings. After Wiley got out of the top of the eighth with just a single hit, the Yellow Jackets were primed for heroics for the second-straight game.

Kelsea Nash singled into right field, and Claire Fergusson came into pinch run. Lesniak stepped up to the plate and crushed a double off the right-center wall, allowing Fergusson to round second and third and cruise home for the second-straight walk-off victory.

Wiley, who came on in relief of Carlee Beck, picked up her first collegiate victory in the circle while Hope Davalos took the loss for CSUP.

The Yellow Jackets take their four-game win streak to Golden, Colorado, to face Adams State and Colorado Mine in an RMAC Pod. The Yellow Jackets face ASU on Saturday at noon, followed by Colorado Mines at 2 p.m. Then on Sunday, the Green and Gold faces CSM at 10 a.m. and Adams State at noon.
